EXCLUSIVE: Rigell Announcing Two National Endorsements
By D.J. Spiker | Sunday, January 3rd, 2010 | PoliticsBearing Drift has learned that Scott Rigell will be announcing the endorsements of two national conservative figures tomorrow, Mike Farris, founder and Chairman of the Home School Legal Defense Fund, and Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel of the American Center for Law & Justice (ACLJ). While Farris’ endorsement has an ill-kept secret in political circles, in announcing with Sekulow, who visited Norfolk with former US Attorney General John Ashcroft on behalf of Ken Cuccinelli for a fundraiser this fall, Rigell continues adding local and now national endorsements.
Tune in this Tuesday night as J.R. and I report live from the Rigell campaign kick-off in Virginia Beach!

Wow, impressive endorsements. I’ve seen that Scott went with Jay on a trip to Israel from his http://www.facebook.com/scottrigell page, but Mike Farris is beloved in the home school movement and he ran for Lt. Governor in ’93. Farris is a conservative’s conservative, and he’s never gotten involved in the 2nd District before. I guess it shows how much he believes in Scott Rigell as a person and as a candidate. I’ve caught Jay Sekulow’s radio program before, he’s a high energy conservative!
National? Really? So he got his travel buddy to endorse him and he got Mike Faris. Who’s next Jerry Kilgore.
Faris is worth something in that he could get the home schoolers out but Nye hasn’t made that many crazy out of line votes (for us now his liberal buddies thats a different story). Also, if Nye gets a primary on his left it will have the effect of making him more palatable to the moderates and pragmatics. Seriously folks what if Nye flips. If Cantor gets Nye to flip then the race is over. I’d rather see Nye flip and we put all this money into Fimian in the 11th or Rust in the 5th. Because ultimately this internal party pissing and moaning over litmus tests and crap is getting us no where.
Good point about the Israel trip, Bryan. It was going to be the subject of a separate post by me, but since you brought it up…
From my understanding, Rigell had the opportunity to meet with several leaders of the government in Israel and see the Golan Heights up close and personal. Generally trips such as these are reserved for delegations, and Rigell was part of this one.
When it comes to building his experience and understanding the implications of his votes in Congress, this type of trip can’t hurt.
Lee – from what I understand, the VB Democrats and progressives are not all that thrilled with Nye. Personally, I really have no major fault with his voting record, but I do disagree with his vote on the budget and other issues that we can debate over the course of this campaign. If he switched parties, I would certainly presume he’d be the GOP nominee.
Lee,
“Rust in the 5th”
Would you care to elaborate?
Oops Thats what I get for posting on one blog and reading in another. Its not Rust but Hurt in the 5th. My mistake.
Lee,
Thats OK, Just wanted to make sure that there wasn’t a last minute entry!
Hey DJ, are you working for the Rigell campaign?
Those are “national” endorsements?
These endorsements are a boost to Rigell. Taking pictures in Israel doesn’t hurt either, especially with foreign policy/national defense emerging as a big issue in 2010.
I also think that it is far from a sealed deal in Virginia 5. Robert Hurt has a strong backing from the establishment, and will probably have a solid vote bloc in the primary. However, the other candidates are beginning to winnow down their numbers. Feda Morton, who has been cited here on several occasions, is gaining steam, and she also has the backing of Mike Farris who can provide her with a tremendous grassroots infrastructure especially with the homeschooling groups. Boyd is making a play for the chairmanship of the Albermarle BOS, which could raise his profile as well.
HMMM! National endorsements?? This is ” fair and balanced”? Where is US Congressman Dan Burton Pledges Support for Candidate Scott Taylor. What is Burton, chopped liver? Sheeesh!
Wally,
Forgive me for working during the day. I can’t always drop what I am doing to run off to my blog and post.
However, in spite of your comment, I have posted, as I intended to all along when I got the statement a mere two hours ago!
Congrats to both candidates on receiving this support.
Dan Burton who? Now if Eric Cantor did it, then that would be news.
J.M.,
You and the author of this post must be paid by Rigell, like the rest of the people who have endorsed him.
Amber,
I’m sad to say, it appears that you’re right. Rigell is operating under the mindset that all he has to do is spend, spend, spend. Just like McWaters, he’ll spend whatever it takes to win this election. It’s a shame that politicians who need to pay to play garner so much support. (Guess it has to do with the half million he’s given to his elected “supporters’.)
Amber and Ben,
I’ll direct your attention to the BearingDrift advertising and consultants policy: HERE
If I were paid by Rigell, I wouldn’t be writing about him. Sorry.
I wonder how Scott Rigell and Jay Sekulow feel about Israel commiting war crimes when they used illegal white phosphorus munitions in Gaza to kill hundreds of innocent children. Rigell is just like Obama, no real experience so he has to ask other people to tell him what to think.
Eddy,
Whose accounts are your accusations based on? If you tell me that they are based on the Hamas-led Palestinian government, then the credibility of your argument is called to question. It is also a well documented fact that Hamas used human shields including children, and purposefully placed innocent women and children in the path of Israeli fire in order to prompt comments like the one that you just posted, lets not fall for the lies of Hamas.
Interesting, when you google the terms this article comes up first
“Human Rights Watch renewed its appeal to Israel to refrain from using white phosphorus shells. “This is a chemical compound that burns structures and burns people,” Kenneth Roth, the executive director of the Washington-based organisation, said. “It should not be used in populated areas.” ”
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east/article5519433.ece
And about the human shields, Hamas was elected as the government in Gaza and Gaza is like New Jersey, a ton of people. No such thing as an area without human shields. So that argument is totally bunk.
I still think attacking Scott for that is weak, he probably has no clue what Israel does. Guilt by association attacks are stupid, we need to get away from politics like that.
Patrick,
“Hamas was the elected government of Gaza”
The Nazis were the elected leaders of Germany before WW2.
It was alleged that white phosphorus was found in Gaza, that allegation finds its origin with doctors in Gaza. Doctors who could be loyal to Hamas. Israel went out of its way to comply with international law, even dropping flyers in crowded areas warning of attacks in advance. International law dictates that white phosphorus may be used as a smokescreen, which would make sense in this case considering Israeli troops were moving into these areas that were already supposed to have been cleared of civilians.
“No such thing as an area without human shields. So that argument is totally bunk.”
So shooting at Israeli soldiers from a crowded hospital is not using the patients as human shields? Forcibly storing your rockets in people’s homes is not using that home and its inhabitants as human shields?
Wow…
Scott Rigell and Jay Sekulow are the right side here.
Good Grief! The leaps and bounds from a tepid endorsement of a local car dealer, then spinning the boondoggle to Israel, and now the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. The prattle surrounding Rigell is starting to sound the same as that used in the deification of Obama in the workup to the 2008 election. Is world hunger next?
Amber, Ben and many other commenters on BD,
I’ve noticed a disturbing trend here recently. It seems that people like yourselves and many others find it appropriate to attack candidates who have been succesful in their professional life and are also successful in fundraising for their campaigns. Let’s stop and think for a moment. Are these not qualities we want and indeed, need, in our candidates? Would we rather have people who have not had some measure of professional success and are unable to raise support/funds to get our conservative message out?
It’s seems like there is some kind of vendetta against successful, well-resourced candidates out there. I just don’t understand it. You can disagree with a candidate on their positions on issues, that’s perfectly fine. But to accuse someone of thinking they can “buy the race” and “spend spend spend their way into the seat” is just not accurate and it lowers our dialogue to an accusatory, trivial level.
Another thought– Rigell has gotten flack about how he’s faithfully financially backed many of our elected officials over a 20 year time. This is ludicrous! Would we rather him NOT have supported our good candidates over the years when he had the means? To say that the electeds are supporting him solely because he has contributed to their campaigns over the years is simply untrue and it is an insult to our elected officials. The folks who have endorsed Rigell have done so because they believe in him. They trust him. They’ve known him, many for 15+ years. They are all stepping up to say “Yes, Scott, it’s your time, we’re behind you.”
My point is, support who you want to support. But spend your time and energy supporting your candidate. Don’t spend your energy tearing down other candidates on unfounded, trivial issues and personal vendettas. I support Scott Rigell because I believe in him. On posts that are positive about Scott Taylor and Ben Loyola, I simply don’t comment. I’m not going to tear them down when something positive happens to them. I think all our candidates deserve a basic level of respect. They are willing to step out and help our country and for that, I’m thankful for them all.
Amber,
I am not paid by ANY political campaign nor political enterprise. I am a supporter of Kenny Golden. I was pointing out that these endorsements from GOP electeds from out of state don’t carry much weight, IMHO.
JR writes: If he [Nye] switched parties, I would certainly presume he’d be the GOP nominee.
You’re out of your mind. Never in a million years. About one year ago he voted for Nancy Pelosi for Speaker, then he voted for a $787 BILLION surplus (all debt), and 14 months ago he defeated a popular (at least within the GOP) Republican Congresswoman. NFW would he get the nomination. He’s rabidly pro-life, pro-Democrat, pro-tax and spend. Impossible.
As being foaming at the mouth “rabid” Democrat as RM suggested, and a couple of lapses in his voting record, Nye has pulled himself towards the center to be a pretty solid independent. He has voted more times than not with Wittman and Forbes and the opposite of Scott. With all of the Democrat money that will be fire-hosed into the 2nd District, the Republican challenger is going to have to go to some extraordinary lengths to put Nye on a “rabidly pro-life, pro-Democrat, pro-tax and spend” defensive that will stick.
Remember:
McDonnell took a lot of heat from the far-right by successfully appealing to moderates and independents. Additionally, Deeds ran a terrible campaign in the general election. Rigell is a social right-winger with unbending ties to CBN/Robertson. He has too-much baggage an a little too scary for independents who will be the determining factor in the second district.
Bringing in Farris may have locked up and energized home-schoolers but may have distanced moderate Republicans to the Nye camp if Rigell prevails.
Nye’s rapport with the military combined with his popular stand against Cap and Trade/Medical Reform strengthen his independent support.
Moreover, if Rigell succeeds in obtaining the nomination his only play book plan will be a rehash of the failed Deeds type strategy – run against party and President not the man.
Someone run this by Larry Sabado
