Doug Wilder gets it

“Virginia families are struggling financially with 10-plus percent unemployment and fallen home values. When Virginians are concerned about whether they will get another paycheck, government should not be spending time figuring out ways to make the people’s checkbooks that much harder to balance.” Doug Wilder, in the Richmond Times Dispatch

Why is it that few other Democrats understand that?

Tim Kaine, in a rush to have more impact in the last weeks of an administration than he had in almost 4 years, is looking at killing the car tax cut, according to our friends at the Virginian-Pilot…which reminds me:

If the Pilot’s editorial board leaned any more to the left, it would be upside down. Compared to them, the Leaning Tower of Pisa looks straight.

The Virginian-Pilot’s publisher, Maurice Jones, was deputy chief of staff to a Democrat governor. He and his fellow leftyscribes will frequently criticize tax cuts as ineffective, but tax increases make the world merry, happy and wise.

The day America takes advice on effective business practices from a newspaper is the day I throw my hands up and quit. When your most popular service is a listing of who died yesterday, the last thing anyone should ask you about is fiscal and social policy.

The rest of the editorial board, fine people all, makes Jones sound like Jim Gilmore by comparison. Every discussion becomes an argument for gas taxes, sales taxes, how much North Carolina rakes in with higher taxes, and we better catch up.

How about a tax credit for newspaper writers who envy higher tax states to just move there and make everyone happy?

Of course, editorial boards LOVE bipartisan redistricting, but they don’t make a single effort to have a bipartisan editorial board. Actually listened to one editor complain about voters who insist on their preconceived philosophy regardless of the facts. I was going to ask him what color the kettle was, but I bit my tongue.

Pilot editorialist Christina Nuckols wrote her column today, and even though Republicans held their statewide meeting in Hampton Roads, she dedicated her column to the Democrats’ meeting in Staunton. You write what you live, they say.

She actually wrote this:

“That leaves Bob McDonnell to reap the benefits, aided by tax increases…”

AIDED BY TAX INCREASES???????????

The Pilot’s editorial philosophy, and they don’t even disguise it anymore, is “tax increases help, tax cuts hurt.”

Can’t wait to see what the Virginian-Pilot will write about the car tax.

I know what Doug Wilder would say.
