About the author

Brian Kirwin

The right wants to jeer him. The left wants to censor him. Moderates usually want both. Brian Kirwin is a political consultant and public relations strategist in Virginia Beach with a lightning-rod flair. Brian also serves on the VB Arts & Humanities Commission and frequently appears on Hampton Roads theatrical stages, if only to prove that all actors aren’t liberals. Kirwin’s columns stir up debate and hit the political scene with no punches pulled.

A truly inspiring campaign. Election Day 2009 could not have given us a more obvious message. Substance wins. The candidates who won focused on the issues and concerns to the voters and citizens, rather than running as hard ideologues (see: Deeds, Creigh and Hoffman, Doug).

you clearly know nothing about the hoffman race…

Yes, an inspiring race, but can he govern? The promises he has made, and his pledge not to increase revenue, seem to be mutually exclusive, especially in regard to educational and transportation infrastructure. Just like Gilmore, I regret that I don’t think he can do what he has promised without additional revenue. Perhaps, like Gilmore, he is counting on growth, but that looks unlikely given the lingering effects of our flirtation with irrational exuberance.
