Live from Obama/Deeds Rally! Voters Dont Turn Out!
By | Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 | Catch-All

The overwhelming majority of people standing in line are students, not residents of Norfolk, Portsmouth or Virginia Beach. Very few Deeds paraphernalia, signs or shirts. Obama is clearly the draw, not Deeds.

That makes no sense. You can have residency if you live on campus. You can go to ODU if you live in Norfolk, Portsmouth, or Virginia Beach. In fact I’d bet the majority of people who go to ODU live in those cities and Chesapeake. A huge number of students live right off campus.

  2. JR Hoeft October 27, 2009 15:14 pm

True, Max. The two are not mutually exclusive.

And, it’s not a surprise that Obama is the draw, considering Deeds is polling nineteen points down and that it was young people who were very jazzed by the president last year.

Still, though, I would imagine the organizers would want to see more than just students show up for this.

  3. Max Shapiro October 27, 2009 15:30 pm

Yeah, it just shows how stupid the organizers are. I live a half mile down Hampton Blvd, just before the underpass. 3pm traffic is approaching a standstill. If these people had brains this would have been at the Scope or Harbor Park or something. Not the Ted where there is no parking and horrible traffic problems.

  4. JR Hoeft October 27, 2009 15:33 pm

Just the thing you want to convey to thousands of commuters (and voters) just before election day: that traffic still sucks, two Democratic governors have done nothing about it, and that the cause of today’s delay was the Democratic candidate.

  5. Brian Kirwin October 27, 2009 15:49 pm

Wow, Jody Wagner sounds like a whining, shrieking jr high cheerleader.

  6. Brian Kirwin October 27, 2009 15:50 pm

OOOOO. Bobby Scott just slammed Creigh Deeds over public option health care!

  7. Brian Kirwin October 27, 2009 16:02 pm

Creigh Deeds is speaking before Obama? Who is this rally about anyway?

  8. Brian Kirwin October 27, 2009 16:04 pm

Creigh Deeds “I know a little bit about what I talk about.”

  9. Brian Kirwin October 27, 2009 16:26 pm

    4:26 and Obama’s done….already?

  10. Brian Kirwin October 27, 2009 16:29 pm

What a short speech. Obama even recycled his old “mop” speech.

  11. Brian Kirwin October 27, 2009 16:31 pm

Maybe they ended it early so the audience could make it back to the dining hall on time.

[...] Conersative, a contributor to Bearing Drift, recently made a post saying that the Deeds event with Czar Obama is a flop. He posted a picture (below) of how 50-100 McDonnell-ites have outnumbered Deeds’ people with [...]

Even Obama and his staff knows this race is over. Obama came to Norfolk only because it would look worse if he ignored Deeds.

    Max,
No they cannot claim residency here. Look back on last elections there were lots of college democrats that voted twice due to our absentee Governor Kaine and his crony on the state board of elections applying illegal pressure in the registrars to allow them to vote here as well as in their home state.

  16. Lee Talley October 27, 2009 20:27 pm

If anyone watched… neither NBC or ABC 6 pm news had nothing on Obama being in town for the Creightard and his campaign of suck. They had a story on NBC of the President speaking in front of some solar panels on energy issues (Cap and Trade) but nothing on Virginia. Very telling I do believe. I’m sorry but the President being in town that is home of the largest Navy base in the world usually would get on the news don’t you think?

  17. Max Shapiro October 27, 2009 21:46 pm

    Lee,

What is considered campus contains a lot more living space than just the dorm rooms. ODU owns most everything within a few block radius of the actual “campus” I’m not 100% sure if the people in the dorms have residency at ODU, but that is really insignificant compared to the number of people who live in Norfolk, Chesapeake and VB that go to ODU. Its the local university…

I received an email that called for volunteers to set up for the event. They got first choice on seating. I assume this was an indication the SEIU was not pulled into duty. Any idea on the count?

A second item of note, the traffic problems pretty much forced Obama to burn a ton of AvGas to avoid the beltway and HRBT jams. Driving was not an option.

  19. JeffConn October 27, 2009 22:49 pm

Lee, the rally was on all 3 local news at 6 pm. In fact, 13 had a guy inside the Ted and one outside talking about the protesters. Don’t worry, they didn’t show the crazy ones.

Gosport, the Deeds campaign put out the word that no one should bring in signs. Something about slowing up the security searches.

Brian, i was surprised at how quick the whole thing went too. I was under the impression that the first speaker would start at 4 pm, and Obama would speak around 5 pm.

  20. Sam October 28, 2009 00:36 am

College students can claim residency – but if they do, they can’t vote at home. For example, I could claim Lexington (Washington and Lee) or Martinsville (my parents’ house). If anything, Lexington is more legitimate than Martinsville because I spend more time at school than I do at home.

  21. Gosport.Conservative October 28, 2009 01:08 am

    JeffConn,

There were still people wearing shirts and stickers; they were just very few and far in between. Besides the one Deeds 4×8 leaning against the Ted, from the outside you would have thought this was a joint McDonnell/Deeds appearance. And the signs was just an excuse to pass them out, like the D-E-E-D-S letters that were passed out to people, an attempt to make it look homemade and not generated. All in all it was a very poorly run event from top to bottom.

  22. Lee Talley October 28, 2009 06:53 am

    JeffConn
By 6 pm news I mean the national news… local news is meaningless.

  23. Lee Talley October 28, 2009 06:56 am

    Speaking of meaningless local news

Has anyone seen the new ads against Ron Villanueva that have Andy Fox and Wavy 10 in them. I do think a tv news operation allowing your news segments and esp your broadcaster who is a KNOWN Democrat is crossing all lines of credibility,
