Ben Loyola outraises Scott Rigell and Glenn Nye
By Brian Kirwin | Thursday, October 15th, 2009 | PoliticsThe Second Congressional District race is quickly becoming the hottest race in the nation.
Ben Loyola blasted his fundraising numbers out first – filing his first report with $536,513 on hand. Breaking the half-million mark out of the gate is impressive! Loyola is a 30-year veteran and small business owner
Scott Rigell raised over $227,000 from donors bringing his total fundraising to over $452,000. An incredible showing. The press release claimed “Rigell will surely be one of the few candidates in the country who outraised an incumbent opponent.”
Guess he knew Loyola would be another one of the few.
Guess we’re in for one heck of a primary season.
UPDATE – This just in to Bearing Drift:
“Ben Loyola brought in a total of over $547,000 with a large part being a loan. The Loyola Campaign was very deliberate in its respect of the November 3rd election. Ben has been and always will be firmly committed to the election of the Republican Ticket in November and has deliberately tried not to take from the same pool of donors that Bob McDonnell needs to defeat the Democrat opponent. Ben has raised only some family and a limited amount of money from personal and business contacts deliberately out of respect and a desire not to undermine the Republican ticket.
Scott Rigell has not made the same effort and it is not the first time he has undermined the Republican Party with a finance report. While $264,806 has come from personal and family money, the Rigell campaign took $184,490 out of the potential donor pool. The Republican ticket needs every cent it can get and Ben refused to take from that pool and will not apologize for it. We need an unselfish leader with the resources to bring the Republican Party back into power in 2nd District and Ben Loyola is obviously the man for the job.” – Chris Woodfin, Strategist for Loyola for Congress

FACT CHECK: Ben only raised $47,000.00, the rest is a “loan” to his campaign that was taken out on 9/30/2009 and due on 9/30/2009.
Scott Rigell raised over $227,000, not counting any personal money, besting the incumbent Glenn Nye of money raised and none of that amount came from PAC money.
Wow, it seems people enjoy playing accounting gimmicks! Just what we need, another politicians who is willing to start off on the wrong foot.
Did Ben forgot to mention that he used accounting gimmicks and only loaned his campaign 500,000 for A DAY to boost his numbers? http://query.nictusa.com/cgi-bin/dcdev/forms/C00463869/435973/sc/10 –> that’s the official FEC website.
Without that loan, Ben only raised 47k! Even his own father refused to max out to him! How sad.
It is clear that Scott Rigell is the candidate overwhelmingly supported by real 2nd district voters, donors and leaders at this point. The Loyola campaign statement is muddled thinking.
Scott Rigell has given over $30,000 to Robert McDonnell and Ben Loyola has only given $1,000. Why hasn’t Ben Loyola raised and given a comparable amount to McDonnell or the other state wide candidates?
Economics 101 tells me that donor dollars aren’t a zero sum game. The pie can grow when there are great candidates to fund like a Scott Rigell.
Furthermore, Scott Rigell was Bob McDonnell’s first finance chairman when he ran for House of Delegates in 1991. Rigell isn’t going to do anything to hurt the election of one of his closest friends.
Finally, the Loyola statement defies logic because 29 out of his 33 individual donors ARE FROM HAMPTON ROADS. It shows he was willing to raise money from within Hampton Roads but wasn’t able to get any money.
Your headline should be Rigell outraises Nye and outraises Loyola by 4x.
Bearing Drift should compare apples to apples to serve their readers.
I don’t like apples.
Ben did not loan the money for merely a day. He loaned it for as long as the campaign needs it. The money is still in the bank.
The FEC disagrees and says he only lent the money for a day! It says the due date on the loan was Sept 30, 2009 (the same day he lent the money).
FEC.gov – and search for “Loyola”. It’s under Schedule C. Maybe Ben made another mistake or lied again.
If we can’t trust him to file his personal statements properly, how can we possibly trust him to accurately account for Taxpayer money?!
Eric,
The FEC site has it wrong. Ever known a government entity to get something wrong?
Ben Loyola has been raising money since June! He clearly has no support in this district. 47k is pathetic for a millionaire.
Scott Rigell is acting like the man he gave 1000 dollars too (Obama), throwing money at a challenge. We are tired of being bought by these status quo annointed people, who don’t represent the people.
If Loyola was really as loyal to the McDonnell campaign as he says, why has he only given $1,000? It seems if he’s such a “millionaire” who is so protective of the campaign he would have made a larger contribution. Rigell has given $30,000 to McDonnell and helped him every step of the way for over 15 years. Rigell has more than proven himself to the McDonnell camp. The fact that on September 30th Loyola had to get a $500,000 loan is a desperate move.
Rigell has overwhelming support in the 2nd district. He has been deeply involved in the community for over 20 years and to say he is buying the race is ridiculous. He only matched what his supporters gave which says a lot about who he is and how he operates.
The numbers speak for themselves: Rigell raised $227,000 from supporters and Loyola raised $47,000. You can call it what you want, but Rigell clearly has the support to win this race.
This is a joke, right?
It’s sad to see Ben’s campaign this desperate, this early – but it’s really no surprise when you consider everything.
Mr. Rigell raised nearly five times more money than Ben Loyola and has five times more contributors than Ben Loyola. If Ben’s campaign wants to trot out a truly pathetic ‘we weren’t trying’ excuse, that’s their prerogative. But the fact is that Ben Loyola lacks the community support that Mr. Rigell has, and it is showing rather obviously.
Here’s another fun fact: Ben Loyola is evidently wealthy enough to throw half-a-million dollars into his own campaign, but he’s only given Bob McDonnell $1,000 – and only after he launched his congressional campaign!!!!!
Fun Fact Number 2: Mr. Rigell has given roughly $300,000 to his friend Bob McDonnell over the course of several years (and decades!)
How’s that for irony?
Chuck Smith!
Anyone surprised by this does not know Aaron and Chris…
THIS JUST IN FROM THE SCOTT RIGELL CAMPAIGN:
SCOTT RIGELL OUT-RAISED CLOSEST RIVALS NEARLY 5 TO 1
Closest two rivals raised roughly $47,000 and $27,000, respectively from individual donors
GOP candidate’s debut fundraising quarter demonstrates
unmatched support from Hampton Roads voters
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Republican candidate for Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, Scott Rigell was surprised and pleased that he far out raised his closest rivals for the Republican nomination by a margin of nearly 5 to 1:
“It is vital that any candidate for Congress be able to demonstrate that they have real, substantive support from the community in which they raise their family, run their business and are involved in the community. I am proud that our campaign has so greatly resonated with actual voters in the Hampton Roads.”
With over 130 individual donations just from Hampton Roads residents, more than 10 to 1 the number of individual donors of his closest rival, Scott Rigell has demonstrated the breadth and support from the grassroots needed to defeat the incumbent and win the nomination.
“Scott Rigell’s unmatched support from Hampton Roads voters solidifies his status as the clear frontrunner for the GOP nomination. His two closest rivals, Ben Loyola and Ed Maulbeck, raised roughly $47,000 from 33 individual donors and $27,000 from 17 individual donors, respectively, which demonstrates that they do not have the foundation to defeat an incumbent member of Congress.
“Scott Rigell will be one of the few Republican challengers in the nation who has actually out-raised an incumbent Democratic Congressman. Fundraising numbers, this early in the race, are often an accurate barometer of who can harness enough support to defeat an incumbent. Scott Rigell is the only Republican challenger in Hampton Roads who can say he outraised Glenn Nye with real donors rather than a simple campaign loan to artificially and temporarily inflate numbers,” stated Campaign Manager Jason Miyares.
Rigell has 130 donors? Some comments call that huge support in the district? This man has been running since the winter time and filed in July. Scott Taylor has more volunteers then he has donors! Go Scott!!
Look at his contributions his whole family gave 4800 each! That is his money!
Didn’t Scott Taylor just have to foreclose on three of his properties?!
How in the world can we trust someone with trillion dollar budgets when they can’t even manage a few hundred thousand of their own money?!
Scott Taylor should get out of the race and immediately start repaying all the people he has been ripping off. It’s a complete disgrace.
Eric,
You should probably get your facts straight before you start slinging mud. I just checked online and found no foreclosures for Scott Taylor. I’m sure however, being in real estate is tough no matter who you are right now, but you probably have no idea. Either way that is a man who actually cares about the people and is not picked by Thelma Drake. Let the people decide not the purse or someone who feels she chooses the next one. All that money won’t be such a factor in the primary or convention.
Hey Eric, let me guess you were probably evicted or a disgrunted tenant, usually when people start spitting bs out the mouth, they are the real disgrace.
Interesting, having lots of money won’t get someone elected. It helps sure, but the voters in the 2nd district are smart enough to see through the $$$. I am excited to see Taylor’s campaign and the overwhelming grass roots efforts from his campaign. It’s good to see some real heart. Frankly, I’m just sick and tired of shady, mudslinging politics, and people that just say what serves them at the time.
Foreclosures are a matter of public record, there are none for Taylor. Can you be sued for defamation of character for saying such things. I am just getting involved in the race and learning about each canidate. I am going to hear their views and make an intelligent informed decision and what is best for the 2nd district. It’s sad that people have to always bash others to try to make another canidate look good or to just be dumb. Let’s judge the canidates on their merits not some idiots false views.
Taylor for 2nd District!!
I wouldn’t call myself a “Scott Rigell guy”. I want to win the seat back! Until any other person shows they can win, Scott Rigell all the way!
And yes, Scott Taylor did file for foreclosure. Page 27 of “inside business”. Monday, October 12, 2009 issue. 314 22nd Street, unit B, Virginia Beach, VA is SCOTT TAYLOR’s property!
Anyone who wants “proof” – I will gladly scan and email the land records and foreclosure filing. My email address is norfolknews207@gmail.com.
Again, i’m not saying Scott Taylor is the worst human ever. I’m just saying a guy who can’t keep his own finances straight can’t possibly keep America’s taxpayers straight!
Actually, I just realized they have a website.
http://www.insidebiz.com/ME2/dirmod.asp?sid=6E1D4E1DFAE84C08B7F5FB89A6769EBF&nm=PREVIEW&type=Publishing&mod=Publications%3A%3AArticle&mid=8F3A7027421841978F18BE895F87F791&tier=4&id=D467E2339995411A826AC66297F4B07B
That’s the link. Just do a find of “314 22nd Street” on the page and you’ll see it for yourself!
Actually Eric, Scott still owns the property and it is currently under contract for sale, I know this because I manage the property and have the property under contract. Your not even posting the correct address.
We are with you Scott! At least you understand our struggles!
No Jared, you should get your facts straight. Rigell has not been “running since the winter”. He’s been running since the summer. So you may not think 130 individual donors is huge support but no one else is even close to getting that kind of support this early in the game. People are excited about Rigell, excited enough to give and give early. Why not get behind the guy who can actually win the seat back in 2010?
Maybe the money hasn’t been put out yet, but Taylor has way more support. Each person can only vote 1X, doesn’t matter if they are worth $1 or $1 mil
Realitycheck,
Scott Rigell was sat down by Thelma Drake and talked into running. Everyone in the political “scene” already knows this. That happened in the winter. Ask around. Scott Taylor just filed. We will see how many supporters have given to him by Jan, the next reporting period. These aren’t big donors or his money through his family. There is big excitement already for Scott. People are happy he didn’t go away from politics. Rigell is a long time donor not a servant of the people. I guarantee you Taylor will have more donors from his first event then Rigell has had since the winter from all types of people in the district, not the same social circle. That is real support that can’t be bought in a primary.
realitycheck, people are excited about the man that supported Barack Obama in 2008?
Look at Rigell’s finance report. There isn’t a single grassroots activist that gave him money. His donations consist of family, auto dealers, business acquaintances, and typical elitist Republicans that have sat in smoke-filled rooms with him for years.
Eric, it is refreshing to see like someone like Ben Loyola making a serious personal commitment by selling a division of his company and applying it to this campaign to oust a Democrat is really getting under your skin. That commitment is even more evident by researching Ben’s background on his website. By the way you are attacking Ben and other Republicans and by your willingness to go negative, it appears as though you may be a shill for the Glenn Nye campaign. Shame on you for misrepresenting yourself as a Republican, and Scott Rigell couldn’t have a better advocate.
Hey Ben… they are scared of Sarah Palin too. Looks like you and she have much in common. They only attack the ones that scare them the most. Congratulations!
Hey Eric, how much did Scott Rigell shuffel into his campaign from the Cash for Clunkers program which he was bragging about on his business webite? Talking about a payback and return on investment for his $1,000 contribution to the Obama campaign….
Why all the interest about candidates bank rolling their own campaigns, it’s votes that count not money in the bank. If certain individuals did not see Taylor as a threat they would not be digging inaccurate dirt and posting it on here. Scott Taylor all the way!!!!
Ben was a pilot on a Navy aircraft carrier and knows what it means to be deployed and in harms way. My husband is currently deployed on the Eisenhower as an F-18 pilot and when I e-mailed him about Ben running for Congress, he was estatic and replied back with “finally, a carrier pilot is running for office”. Lots of excitement here and the Eisenhower family wants to help.
Yes, it’s the votes that count, that sure worked out for the man in the white house, didn’t it. What a shame he wasn’t given more scrutiny. Republicans shouldn’t be eating their own. The enemy is not within. Look north.
Anyone but Glenn!
Chuck Smith is clearly the most qualified…
Wow. This comment thread shows just how intense this nomination contest will be. May the best man win.
Scott Rigell had an amazing fund raising quarter – way ahead of Loyola and Maulbeck. Scott is clearly the front runner in this campaign and certainly has the local Republican support. Eric – I agree with you about desperate moves by the Loyola campaign to make it look like they raised over 500k this quarter when it was actually just a loan by the candidate! These type of political tactics show the true character of a person and immediately identifies him as a person that I do not want representing me. Loyola and his campaign managers need to realize that the public is much smarter than they obvioulsy realize. To say this much money was actually raised would “imply” that Loyola has an overwhelming number of supporters. Well, we know that it isn’t true.
I just opened a mail piece today from Scott Rigell’s campaign dated 10/19 reminding me to Vote for his friend Bob McDonnell. Then, I opened up a fundraising letter dated 10/23 from Ben Loyola’s campaign.
Hey, didn’t Loyola’s campaign trumpet on the roof tops how much they respected Bob’s campaign for Governor that they wouldn’t dare raise $ before the election because it might hurt Bob and the ticket. That was in fact one of their main excuses for only raising $47k to Rigell’s $227k in individual donoations.
What hypocrisy! The Loyola letter was dated just yesterday but anybody who has worked a campaign knows it takes maybe even a week or more to get this type of fundraising mailing out.
It is very possible that while the Loyola campaign was speaking out of one side of their mouth about the importance of Bob’s race they were speaking out of the other with their fundraising team about raising $ from Bob’s potential donors a week before the votes were cast. How convenient Team Loyola! I hope this isn’t foreshadowing for how they plan to run their race.
This is a joke, arron and chris are desperate, they are going to run this campaign into the ground just like every other campaign they have ever been a part of. The Fact is that Scott Rigell raised more money then any of his rivals by a margin of 5 to 1, and has been listed as “on the radar” by the nrcc. Ben Raised 47,000 and then donated 500,000 to his campaign to inflate his numbers for a day.
Loyola only raised $47,000 from donors….the rest is a $500,000 loan.
Rigell raised over $327, 000 from donors plus a $125,000 loan to get to his total as of Sept 30, 2009.
I genuinely enjoy this blog.
