Get ready for the confusion. Democrats who have supported tax increases are spending October telling voters they haven’t. Of course, they wink to editorial boards a different tale to get endorsements and then wink to voters that they have opposed everything they told newspaper writers that they (ready for this focus-group tested line?) are keeping “on the table.”
Within 24 hours, the Virginian-Pilot turned Joe Bouchard from a tax raiser to, well, whatever his poll told him to be.
Virginian Pilot Tuesday Oct. 7.
“For example, he (Bouchard) suggested defining a “tourism corridor” on Interstate 64 and a “freight corridor” on U.S. 460 that would use tolls to encourage division of cars and trucks. Cars would pay more to use U.S. 460 and trucks would pay more to use I-64.
He said a combination of tolls, a gas tax increase , and tapping the general fund could pay for road improvements.”

Funny, these Democrats aren’t running TV ads on SB 6009 in 2008 where they happily voted to increase sales taxes in Hampton Roads 25%
Yep, ask these Democrats why they voted for a regional sales tax on Hampton Roads? Yeah, wasn’t that a grand strategy going into the worst recession in 30 years?
That’s a good question for a reporter to ask. “Dear Mr. Democrat, why do your ads say you’ve taken a hard line against taxes while you voted for the largest sales tax increase in Hampton Roads history?”
Not that it would matter. Any answer they’d give, the newspaper would erase the next morning.
UPDATE: Aaron Applegate, Pilot reporter, cleared up some of the controversy.
Del. Joe Bouchard told the Pilot in an interview that a gas tax could be part of a comprehensive transportation plan. Then Bouchard’s spokesman Alex Youn told Aaron that “Joe is against any type of gas tax increase”
Alex just forgot to tell Joe Bouchard that.
