(Updated with Debate Recording) Live Blog and Live Stream of today’s debate
By | Thursday, September 17th, 2009 | Politics

Update: You can now watch the debate in its entirety from NewsChannel 8.

****

You can catch Ryan Nobles of Decision Virginia Live-Blogging the action while you watch it from the feed from NewsChannel 8 of the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce Virginia Gubernatorial Debate today at 10:30 a.m.

And, of course, you can leave your reaction here on this open-thread.

Nobles tweeted earlier this morning that the debate “better be good“, especially given how early he had to get up to attend it (commuting from Richmond).

Will this debate have news or be a dud? Of course, if Deeds presents a transportation plan, then perhaps it will make news!

    Creigh for Governor!

Gregory calls out Deeds’ : Can you run without a specific plan on transportation?

  3. Gosport Conservative September 17, 2009 11:31 am

Deeds just approved of mandates for health insurance, penalizing individuals who don’t have it with fines?! ‘I approve a mandate’

  4. Gosport Conservative September 17, 2009 11:52 am

Deeds steps over the line, ‘You don’t support working women, and now you don’t support working families!’ Completely out of line, especially in front of McDonnell’s family

  5. JR Hoeft September 17, 2009 11:57 am

    Say what?

Deeds: “No, I’m not going to raise taxes, but I’m going to sign a transportation plan that raises new revenue.”

Then he must be “taking money” from the General Fund because that’s clearly where these new revenues would go first.

He just undercut a major argument he’s been making against McDonnell’s transportation plan.

WOW! Deeds’ says some opposition to Obama comes from racism…disagreeing with the White House, and agreeing with Jimmy Carter

  7. JR Hoeft September 17, 2009 12:03 pm

Well, I guess all of us here at BD are racists, according to Creigh Deeds. Apparently there is a “hint of racism” in anyone critical of the president.

Thanks, Creigh for insulting the greater than 50% of the people of the commonwealth who are disturbed over healthcare, energy policy, bank and business nationalization, government overstretch.

    I guess that’s all racist.

Focused on the job ahead? If focus means switching back and forth between issues week after week

    RPV first to the spin-room:

FAIRFAX – Frequently visibly angry and often rattled, Democratic candidate for governor Creigh Deeds today entered the pivotal debate hosted by the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce and still did not unveil a transportation with any substance whatsoever. At one point Deeds contradicted himself on tax increases within the space of a few words. Deeds spouted buzzwords such as “long-term” and “statewide,” but offered nothing more than a thin promise to come up with a plan if he is elected and dropped broad hints that he would raise taxes to accomplish it.

“No, I’m not going to raise taxes, but I’m going to sign a transportation plan that raises new revenue,” Deeds said in an amazing display of disagreeing with himself.

“Every funding mechanism possible is on the table,” Deeds said at one point, again indicating that he would raise gasoline taxes to pay for an as-yet-to-written wish list for roads.

Last month in a live on-line video interview with Jim Nolan of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Deeds was asked: “If you’re governor and you get a bill that funds transportation in some form of either general or non-general fund tax increase, will you sign it?” (Find story here.)

“Democratic gubernatorial candidate R. Creigh Deeds today said that if the General Assembly passed a bill to fund the state’s transportation needs that included an increase in taxes, he would sign it,” wrote the Times-Dispatch. “What I will do is work with Democrats and Republicans to build consensus around a series of ideas that allow us to fund transportation, and yes, I will sign that bill.”

Jim, there’s definitely a whiff of racism around here…

  11. JR Hoeft September 17, 2009 12:28 pm

    This didn’t take long either:

Clearly the McDonnell campaign and RPV is ready to put on a full-court press.

  12. JR Hoeft September 17, 2009 12:29 pm

Well, something (or someone – perhaps Kenney the Younger?) certainly smells around here, Shaun…but it ain’t racism.

  13. Max Shapiro September 17, 2009 12:56 pm

BGP (Background Props) to Chuck Smith, too funny!

  14. Jason Kenney September 17, 2009 13:17 pm

If I eat something Obama doesn’t approve of, will Deeds say it’s flavored with racism?

  15. JR Hoeft September 17, 2009 13:19 pm

Well, it only took DPVA more than an hour to say what they’ve been saying all along – Bob has a social agenda – and offer nothing positive about the vision for Virginia’s future:

RICHMOND- Creigh Deeds stood strong in today’s debate on his record of creating economic and educational opportunity, while Bob McDonnell continued to run from his record.

Following is a statement from the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Virginia, Richard Cranwell:

“After today, Virginia’s choice is clear. Creigh Deeds is the best candidate to continue to lead the Commonwealth forward.

“Its a shame that even in a debate Bob McDonnell won’t stand by his record. But, I know exactly where Bob stands. I’ve known him for over 15 years, and behind the smoke and mirrors, he’s a man determined to pursue a social agenda. And, that’s not what Virginia needs in its next Governor.”

  16. Brian Kirwin September 17, 2009 13:39 pm

So, if Obama disagrees with me, is HE a racist?

  17. John Chen September 17, 2009 13:42 pm

Looks like Bob -1 Deeds -0 after this match up.
He dances all over and doesn’t really answer any questions.
Can’t believe Deeds is linking RACISM+Obama. Bizarre!

    Bob has this Independent’s vote.

  18. JR Hoeft September 17, 2009 13:44 pm

  19. Shaun Kenney September 17, 2009 13:44 pm

Not smells, just a whiff… almost like a passing thought, like “I might raise taxes, I might not” sort of whiff.

  20. Steve Vaughan September 17, 2009 15:24 pm

    Bearing Drift crew:
Didn’t know where else to post this: Your new format looks great.

  21. William Bailey September 17, 2009 23:13 pm

Look at the 12;18 post from JR: I’d point out Bob McD isn’t a Fairfax County native as the banner claims. And he isn’t Virginia Beach’s Own or Arlington’s Own, He is a Philidelphia, Pa native. McD wasn’t born in Va, so please stop claiming to be from all over Virginia on the signs. Reality and a birth Certificate prove he isn’t from anywhere near here…

I have zero problem with a yankee Pa native running for Va’s Gov position as I’m a yankee from Ohio. However I’m not running for Gov…

The signs just give false info and an impression that isn’t supported by the facts. Ethicly McD should set the record straight and pull the incorrect signs. Just my opinion.

  22. JR Hoeft September 18, 2009 00:16 am

William. You’re being silly. But what else should we expect from a union guy?

He lived 21 years in Hampton Roads.
    He grew up in Fairfax.
He was a legislator and Attorney General in Richmond for more than a decade.

That experience means he understands Virginia far better than most of us who have only lived one place.

The bottom line is he is a true Virginian and a true son of the Commonwealth.

“TO BE A VIRGINIAN, by Birth, Marriage, Adoption, or even on one’s mother’s side, is an Introduction to any State in the Union, a Passport to any Foreign Country, and a Benediction from the Almighty God.”

Might I also add, if I should be so bold, by choice.

    Steve – thank you!

  23. William Bailey September 18, 2009 06:33 am

I guess using your standard, I’m a Son of the Commonwealth and true Virginian too. LOL My mom in Ohio is really going to be surprised to find that out… The signs are deceiving and given his Christian background, I’m surprised he took that path.

And I’m a very proud Union guy from Ohio. I’m not afraid of your use of the word.

  24. Brian Kirwin September 18, 2009 06:59 am

Bill, you’re a Son of something, but I’m not gonna say what :)
