Remembering
By | Friday, September 11th, 2009 | Uncategorized

9-11-winceI’m writing this at exactly the minute, 8:46, that American Airlines Flight 11 slammed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. I remember exactly where I was, and it was in the same desk chair typing online, when I got an instant message to turn the TV on because something happened at the WTC.

It began.

Soon after, a second plane hit the South Tower, and all conversations about a random accident transformed to terror.

Eight years. If I wrote about all the thoughts, emotions, fears, angers and shock of that day, I’d be writing well into tomorrow. I do want to honor those we lost that day, and hope you’ll share your thoughts as well.

Non Excidet!

About the author

Brian Kirwin

The right wants to jeer him. The left wants to censor him. Moderates usually want both. Brian Kirwin is a political consultant and public relations strategist in Virginia Beach with a lightning-rod flair. Brian also serves on the VB Arts & Humanities Commission and frequently appears on Hampton Roads theatrical stages, if only to prove that all actors aren’t liberals. Kirwin’s columns stir up debate and hit the political scene with no punches pulled.

Thank you for this venue. I’ve written my own personal remembrance here:

We must be remember and pray for the victims and their families. The story of Deora Bodley (youngest victim on United 93) and her father is especially sad and touching.

Next, we as a nation must vow to never again let ourselves become something worse, for what we’ve suffered. If we do, bin Laden wins. We must unite again, and be “that shining beacon on a hill” for the rest of the world. God bless.

I was press secretary for Don McEachin’s attorney general campaign. We had a press conference scheduled at the Capitol to announce Doug Wilder’s endorsement, his first of anyone on the Dem ticket that year. Going into the room, someone told me that a plane had hit the WTC but details were sketchy at that point and I was thinking it was a small private plane, an accident. About five minutes into the press conference reporters’ cell phone started going off — and our story was gone. After Don and Doug fielded a few questions about the attacks, the press confernece was over and we went back to the office ot watch the coverage on TV. I remember thinking that “whoever did this is in a world of sh*t.” Eight years later, this attack still has not been avenged. That’s the biggest failure — and there were no lack of failures — of the GWB administration.

Mostly I remember we were all Americans on that day. No R’s or D’s just Americans. On that terrible day, there was a unity that I miss so very much eight years later…

    Never forget: FDNY 343.

Steve Vaugn I have an idea. If you’re so damn smart – smarter than the US military and CIA – why don’t you go to Pakistan or Afghanistan and find UBL yourself. And maybe take all those run off at the mouth without knowing what the hell you’re talking about Democrats with you.
