VEA endorses GOP’s Jason Call for Delegate
By Brian Kirwin | Tuesday, August 25th, 2009 | PoliticsThe Virginia Education Association turned some heads today by endorsing Jason Call, Republican for Delegate against Norfolk’s Delegate Algie Howell. The 90th also includes parts of Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.
Call was justifiably proud of the endorsement, adding “We need to reengage our youth in the American Dream to combat drugs, gangs, and teen pregnancy. We need to emphasize education, not incarceration. We need to offer games, not gangs.”
Jason Call’s website is here.
VEA’s letter after the jump:
Dear Mr. Call:

If we can provide additional assistance or if you need further information, please email Rob Jones or Doris Boitnott in the office of Government Relations:

The right wants to jeer him. The left wants to censor him. Moderates usually want both. Kirwin’s columns stir up debate and hit the political scene with no punches pulled.

Go figure. Kudos to the blog that gets the inside story on this one.
I wonder if the VEA was aware of Call’s support for tax credits and vouchers?
Good on Call for getting this endorsement.

As a former union official, I’ll say that endorsements are based on the greatest good for the members and the overall programs involved. I’d guess the VEA picked this candidate because he has the best platform on education and party affiliation wasn’t a factor. Whats wrong with that? I’ve seen many GOP members earn endorsement from unions but the anti-labor folks in the GOP seem to always bad mouth the unions and labor in the end. The Dems don’t own labor and in my experiance “the best candidate” gets the endorsement.
It is a balancing act to over look the negatives and find positives that out weigh the bad in every case. Could be the VEA figurs the tax crdits and vouchers are never going to get enough votes to pass so why make it an issue?
Call is a great guy. I didn’t hold out much hope for him, but maybe I should be second guessing that assumption.
Jason Call would be a definite improvement.
