VPOD 71: Larry Sabato
By | Thursday, August 13th, 2009 | Podcasts

In this edition of Virginia Politics On-Demand, I get the straight scoop from Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, about the “shake-up” at the Deeds campaign. We also discuss where the gubernatorial campaign stands right now, if Deeds lack of policy proposals is a problem, and what his thoughts are on future debates.

“I don’t think there is any question…that Deeds has lost momentum since the primary,” said Sabato.

He also commented on the rearranging of the Deeds deck chairs, saying “I certainly know some senior Democrats who are connected to the Deeds’ campaign who are unhappy, and have been unhappy, with [Joe] Abbey’s performance. Maybe he’s being scapegoated.”

Additionally, Sabato thought that Deeds was not taking part in the debate sponsored by the Center for Politics or the one by Blogs United/Center for Public Policy because Deeds’ just not very good at them.

“Look, some candidates are better at debates than others,” he said. “It’s perfectly clear to anybody watching the process, and anybody who watched that first debate at the Virginia Bar Association, that McDonnell is better at debates. That explains pretty much why one candidate wants to do more debates and one candidate wants to do fewer debates.”

I think the “shakeup” occurred within hours after Deeds secured the primary victory….there can be no other conclusion given how great a Primary campaign he waged against Moran and T-mac both strategically and logistically and then after the victory has fallen off a cliff. No way in hell the same people have been calling the shots post-primary!!
