VPOD 70: Shaun and Jim talk polls, negative attacks, dogs, and unruly mobs
By JR Hoeft | Sunday, August 9th, 2009 | PodcastsIn this episode of Virginia Politics On-Demand, Shaun Kenney and I celebrate our 70th podcast by talking about the things that are most important this week in Virginia politics. In particular, we spoke about:
- The latest polls in the gubernatorial race, including the Daily Kos, PPP, and SurveyUSA polls
- Criegh Deeds “me too-ism“, which includes his position on Arthur Whitfield, a special session, rest stops, charter schools, and the Governors Opportunity Fund. So often has Deeds said “me too” to McDonnell’s leadership, it was former Gov. Doug Wilder (D) who coined the phrase!
- Deeds is so worried about his imploding campaign that he’s already starting to resort to patent falsehoods and attacks, which includes accusing McDonnell of saying somethig he didn’t, attacking McDonnell for the Bush administration and injecting social policy into the race (read TC too on this). Of course, as Joe Biden has campaigned for Deeds, we thought we’d remind you of Biden’s coal policy.
- Jody Wagner’s birthday was this week, so we thought of a perfect gift for her…and Tim Watson clearly explained on Virtucon why her latest attack on Bolling had no merit and completely missed her mark
- Steve shannon thought it would be cute to debate a dog instead of getting serious and debating Ken Cuccinelli twelve times. However, Cuccinelli continues to do the work of the people, while others think campaigning is more important.
Shaun and I also discuss some of the House races…both state and national…
- For the House of Delegates races, we’re paying particular attention to Comstock v. Vanderhye, Rob Bell, Danny Marshall, Ron Villanueva v. Bobby Mathieson, Melody Scalley, John Amaril, Ernesto Sampson, Michael Gage, Jason Call, Tag Grierson, Rich Anderson, Chris Stolle, Glenn Oder, and “The Deacon” v. Rafael Lopez.
- Oh, and we also talked about the U.S. House races, in particular in the 2nd with Glenn Nye and the 5th with Tom Perriello and how the current national debate is going to impact next years elections. Not to mention the fact that both Shaun and I are now certain to be on the White House’s “enemy list” and we broached the subject of townhall meetings.
This was a jam-packed podcast, and went a little long, but I hope you enjoy it.

The bad part isn’t that Steve Shannon debated his dog. The bad part is the dog won.
Hey guys, one more name to add to your discussion on the HoDs list. Jay McConville, running in the 44th distirct – Kris Amundson. Its mostly Mount Vernon, and she has done pretty well her career there but with this now an open seat and Pat Herrity carrying Mount Vernon in the chairman’s race up here last year its a perfect place to steal a seat with coattails.

I enjoyed Jim’s commentary. Very well organized presentation.
I didn’t understand Shawn’s every thought though. Maybe if more prep work was done on his behalf I could follow his line of thinking.
Any way, great job to everyone on your 70th episode!
meh! Just kidding- that was an inside joke.
