$5,000 fine, 10 debates and a FOIA
By | Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 | Politics

The Washington Post’s blogging is on fire lately. It blasts the Virginia Democratic Party for being fined $5,000 by the Federal Elections Commission for their flagrant disregard for campaign finance laws.

It launches Bob McDonnell’s challenge to Creigh “Tax” Deeds for 10 debates all over Virginia, and it slams Tim Kaine for blocking requests for his travel info, since both McDonnell and Deeds have promised to release all travel information as Governor.

Not bad for the week of July 4th.

10 debates? Did Bob get a bad internal poll or something? Usually the guy who sees himself as behind is the one who wants multiple debates. Traditionally we have three or four, why should this year be different?

Because it’s change we can believe in.

I would be willing to bet there is some political strategy in this request. McDonnell can handle himself in debates, he is good on his feet (that whole lawyer thing you know) and remember Deeds and McDonnell have debated before so his camp knows how the to look head to head. However, I would also imagine that the McDonnell camp knew that Deeds people would not go for 10 debates, and by asking for them first it makes Deeds look like he is hesitant to face McDonnell.
