Nuke-Hungry Madmen? Naaah. Lead with the Cheating Politician.
By Jane Dudley | Wednesday, June 24th, 2009 | PolicyThis post is for the news editors of ABC, NBC, and CBS, all of whom lead the evening’s “news” broadcast with Gov. Sanford’s infidelity, instead of the apparent Tiananmen-style killing that is happening in Iran right now. Please, oh please, editors, spare us any lectures on why you are better because you are professionals. You may belong to some kind of a guild, but you don’t have any kind of perspective – not any more.

You know what they say… “If it bleeds, it leads…. unless a politician is having an affair.”
Isn’t that how the saying goes?
Oh build a bridge and get over it! There have been mass killings, civil wars, and strife across the world and the media here has not batted an eyelash. Iran is not the only country in the world. There has been a war going on in the Democratic Republic of Congo formerly Zaire for over a decade. And you know no media outlets have led with that story either.
The media is still constantly covering what is going on in Iran to the extent that they can even get information out of the country.
And Sanford lied about his whereabouts. He left the country driving a state owned vehicle to the airport. He didn’t tell his staff, his wife, or more importantly the Lt. Governor. So, it’s a bigger deal than just: “Oh! He cheated on his wife.” It’s much like how Elliot Spitzer lead the news when he cheated on his wife using state resources in the process. And it’s national news because he was potential contender for the Republican Presidential Nomination. And he made a name for himself by refusing stimulus money a fight he took to his own state supreme court who smacked him down. So, he has a little more recognition outside of just Charleston.
tx2vadem – Yes, Sanford was extremely irresponsible. If I were a South Carolinian I think I would want him to resign. Yes, it was a big story. My point was that Iran is a much bigger story. I know also that it is very hard to get reliable info out of Iran. (But that doesn’t stop “news” people from yakking on at length about all kinds of things).
Agree also that there is so much more going on internationally that ought to be covered but isn’t. But then as Jason points out, tawdry stories are an easier sell than complicated international ones.
Bottom line – News media elites can relate more to marital affairs than foreign massacres.
Loved to read your blog. I would want to suggest you that site visitors present most people browse through blogs on Mondays. So it should really encourage bloggers to compose new produce ups above the weekend primarily.
Aw, this was a in fact excellent publish. In theory I’d want to produce like this also – taking time and true work to build a wonderful write-up… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and in no way seem to acquire something carried out.
Some exceptional thoughts the following. Have you been convinced this can be the proper solution to look at it although? My own particular experience is the fact that anybody need to rather substantially reside and let stay considering what one person thinks just — a different particular person simply doesn’t. Human beings are going to do what they wish to do. Within a end, they at all times do. The most we can pray for would be to highlight a number of issues the following and there that hopefully, enables them to make just a little far better informed choice. Otherwise, awesome submit. You are undeniably making me assume!
A of my favorite details about blogging is this community of bloggers. We aren’t cut-throat. We share successes and miseries. And when some thing operates, we do not preserve it to ourselves – we want it to function for almost everyone. I really like blogging and hope that it becomes full-time a person day, but I love the finding out and growing (the journey) and am an exceptionally patient man.
