Blast from the Past
By E M Barner | Saturday, June 13th, 2009 | PolicyEver wonder what happened to Don Beyer? Wonder no longer:
Obama named former Virginia Lt. Gov. Donald Beyer to be ambassador to Switzerland and Luxembourg. Beyer, who made his money as a car dealer, raised more than $500,000 for Obama and also contributed $4,600 to his campaign.
Hmmm…. could there be a connection?
Now I’m wondering, does Beyer like to ski or is it just that he is attracted to the prospect of living in a country that has a reputation for studied neutrality on every topic of importance?

It’s not much of a shock that ambassadorships go to big campaign contributors. That’s been the case in every administration, Democratic or Republican. And Don Beyer is one of the nicest people involved in Virginia politics. He’s been in the political wilderness for a few years because Virginia Democrats, unlike Virginia Republicans I’d say, bury their losers. Creigh Deeds this year is proving an exception to that rule, but generally if you lose a race for Democrats in Virginia, they don’t want to hear from you any more. That only applies to candidates of course. Losing consultants are in high demand.
