Views from the Grasstops: Loudoun

Bearing Drift catches up with Glen Caroline, who has served as chairman of the Loudoun County Republican Committee since March of 2008.

Your county experienced nearly a 10 point swing between the 2004 and 2008 elections, with Bush getting 55.7% in 04 and McCain getting 45.4% of the vote in 08. What changed and why? Do you anticipate your county being a long-term political battleground?

I think Loudoun will be an area that VA politicians focus on for the foreseeable future. I think if you look at our most recent elections in 2008 through a local lens, you see a story of strength and vitality for the GOP in Loudoun. Take for instance the fact, that, in arguably the worst year ever for a Republican to run for office, U.S. Representative Frank Wolf trounced his Democrat opponent, garnering almost 60% of the vote; a larger margin than his victory against the same opponent two years earlier. Further, the Loudoun County Republican Committee (LCRC) was the only political party in Loudoun to take a principled and public stand in opposition to the meals tax ballot question. That misguided taxpayer grab went down in flames 31%-69%.

Who is your favorite Democrat in Virginia politics and why?

Any Democrat who realizes that Republican policies are superior in improving the lives of Virginians and who ends up voting Republican.

Tell me about a volunteer in your unit who is a Republican hero. What does he or she do for your local committee?

Tom Seeman has been involved with the LCRC for some time. In addition to holding one of the most important and challenging assignments in the entire LCRC (Precinct Operations Chairman), Tom and some friends do a counter protest every Friday at Walter Reed (to counter to Operation Pink), supporting the troops. After the rally he goes inside Monroe House and meets with recovering soldiers, delivers donations folks have collected, and just socializes with the guys who don’t have family around. Then the last Friday of every month HE organizes and manages a trip for the wounded soldiers who can make it out to see the dinner Theater in Alexandria. He has done this for several years.

What do you see as the biggest concern for average citizens in your area?

Of course the economy is front in center in the minds in many Loudoun voters, as are the issues of transportation, education, jobs, and public safety.

Glen Caroline is chairman of the Loudoun County Republican Committee. He is the Director of the NRA-ILA’s Grassroots Division. Glen is married and is the father of two children. The Caroline family resides in the South Riding area.
