Nye looking for fiscal responsibility, but…
By | Thursday, June 11th, 2009 | Policy

In a meeting with the president Tuesday, Rep. Glenn Nye advocated for the PAYGO solution to budget management – the first legislation formally proposed by Pres. Obama.

“Families in Hampton Roads have to live within their means, and the federal government should too. We can’t keep running up the debt and expecting the next generation to pick up the tab. It’s time for us to take responsibility, and I look forward to passing this bill into law as soon as possible,” said Congressman Nye. “Although short-term spending was necessary to get the economy moving again, we will only solve our long-term problems by restoring real fiscal discipline.”

According to a Nye release, the proposal “would create a federal law requiring the government to offset all spending increases with corresponding spending cuts – instead of adding to the national debt. Statutory PAYGO laws were in effect in the 1990s when the federal budget was balanced, but they were allowed to expire in 2002.”

But the National Republican Congressional Committee is less concerned about PAYGO – which seems to be a fairly conservative proposal – and more concerned about the upcoming healthcare debate:

Voters in Virginia deserve to know if Glenn Nye is willing to stand up to Pelosi to protect them from Democrats’ massive government-run healthcare plan,” said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. “Right now, it appears that Nancy Pelosi and Democrats in Congress want to do for the healthcare industry what they did for General Motors. If that is the case, is Glenn Nye willing to stand up to Nancy Pelosi and stop the big government power grab?”

Will PAYGO legislation off-set a healthcare mandate? Will healthcare spending be subject to PAYGO restrictions?
