A tale of two newspapers
By | Monday, June 8th, 2009 | Catch-All

Hampton Roads can enjoy two newspapers’ editorials today. The Virginian-Pilot supports air, and that’s a good thing, because that’s what their argument is. They write about why we need 300-windmills in the ocean 12 miles offshore even though it won’t generate enough power to do everything we need and the Navy isn’t thrilled about.

This after repeatedly opposing small drilling platforms 50 miles offshore even though it won’t generate enough power to do everything we need and the Navy isn’t thrilled about.

It’s amazingly entertaining to watch the newsies now push aside the same arguments they relied upon to oppose drilling. No wonder they have no problems with politicians who flipflop.

The Daily Press, however, captured in an excellent piece how Obamanomics isn’t anything like the America anyone knew or had voted for.

“the new administration and Congress are imposing a new style of government, one more in control of business, more involved in individuals’ lives, more powerful and more willing to exercise that power to accomplish a vision that’s more closely aligned with modern-day Europe than with American tradition.”

The Daily Press even accuses Obama of chicanery and favors for union political contributions.

“Treasury called the shots on reconstituting Chrysler, and giving the UAW a bigger slice of the pie, and bondholders a smaller slice, than their financial stake justifies, must be driven by Democrats’ eagerness to reward the unions that help elect them.”

OUCH! If that’s not rich enough, the Daily Press slams Obama for potentially leading us back into a mortgage crisis.

“Now the FHA will let borrowers use the stimulus plan’s $8,000 tax credit for first-time home buyers as a down payment, taking a loan against the credit in advance. Didn’t the subprime debacle teach anything? If a buyer’s resources are so slim they’re short $8,000 for a down payment, the government shouldn’t be enticing them into mortgages.”

I’d flip if I ever saw that in Virginian-Pilot ink.

About the author

Brian Kirwin

The right wants to jeer him. The left wants to censor him. Moderates usually want both. Brian Kirwin is a political consultant and public relations strategist in Virginia Beach with a lightning-rod flair. Brian also serves on the VB Arts & Humanities Commission and frequently appears on Hampton Roads theatrical stages, if only to prove that all actors aren’t liberals. Kirwin’s columns stir up debate and hit the political scene with no punches pulled.

If the Daily Press expanded their coverage even a modicum to South Hampton Roads, it would be my new morning paper.

It’s nice that the internet has broken down the barriers of monopolies in print though. While the Virginian-Pilot has a monopoly here, we can still get online to see other news and commentary from around the area.

In some ways, it’s like being in China and being able to read the news over the internet. Given the political proclivities of the “Pilot”, I don’t think I am far off using this simile.
