He has had to tack left in that time and that will make him less appealing to centrists. Furthermore, he will suffer a "Jerry Kilgore problem" in NOVA where people will see and hear him and think, "This guy's a hayseed" whereas they'll see Bob McDonnell and view him as "one of them" having grown up in Fairfax. Additionally, the business community is now swinging back towards the GOP as they see McDonnell is a mainstream conservative candidate who they can support.
