George Allen on Gitmo
By | Friday, May 22nd, 2009 | Policy

George Allen continues to be a hot commodity, appearing all across the country on radio and still is a guest on national TV. But, he is also a periodic blogger.

In his latest post, Allen commends Rep. Frank Wolf for his stand on keeping Guantanamo detainees in Cuba and “embarrassing” Democrats into “changing their positions” on the issue. Allen says:

“Those who are enemy combatants can logically be detained as such until hostilities are concluded. I don’t see why any of them need to be brought to the U.S. And, Gitmo was not intended to be an Ellis Island.”

I partially agree with George Allen. Enemy combatants can be detained until hostilities are concluded.

On the Gitmo thing I am somewhere in the middle though. Part of the justification for detaining them in Gitmo was to thread the needle and throw a wrench into attempts to determine their status while trying to label them as illegal combatants instead of Prisoners of War. While I am not one to say Gitmo MUST be closed (the detention facilities only) I can understand how doing so might be desirable.
