Nye expands Veterans benefits
By | Thursday, May 21st, 2009 | Policy

Rep. Glenn Nye (D-VA02), introduced legislation and had it overwhelmingly passed 406-15 to help veterans start and run their own business.

The Veterans Business Center Act will establish those centers under the Small Business Administration in order to “provide business training, counseling, access to capital, and information about government contracting opportunities in order to help veterans apply their skills and training to the challenge of running a small business,” according to a Nye release.

Now let’s see if the Party of NO in the Senate doesn’t go to auto-filibuster over this. Obama might get credit! GASP!

As a veteran I can tell you while I want to support this measure I have issue with programs that are set up a geared to “select” citizens allowing them greater access to funding or opportunity than other citizens. We constantly “talk” about leveling playing fields in business but then keep creating what could only be described as a special interest program. I think Vets are better served though the efforts of the benefits directly to them through the GI Bill and the expansion of those which are meant to reward them for their committed service. I just take issue with turning that into business development. Maybe I am crazy but I just do not get granting “certain” citizens greater access to opportunity than the average person lookin to start a business. To me that tilts the playing field of competition.

JeffConn – As a conservative Republican I posted something cool about Nye. As my grandmother used to tell me, “Don’t kick a gift horse in the mouth.”

Or, as the Squeaky Wheel often says, “You scored a touchdown, act like you’ve been there before.”

(On your comments to JeffConn) – Right on target JR!

To this point I haven’t been impressed by Nye’s voting record or support for Rangel. This however, is a big win for him. Especially in this area with its large military presence.

    Good job Glenn!

    Alter of Freedom,

Sorry, but I am a retired (21 years) military vet who was unable to take advantage of the GI Bill. When I retired I faced a choice. Either I could go to college or I could go to work and put my kids through college. My kids won.

Now something finally is being offered to me that I may or may not take advantage of (I do not yet know the details). But I do not understand why you insist I should be penalized with nothing because I could not afford to take advantage of the GI Bill because I wanted my kids to get a college education.

I also do not understand why we should not “select” for rewards those most deserving, those who served. Everyone had the opportunity to volunteer to serve. It is not a penalty for those who did not serve, only a reward for those who volunteered.

After several days on a stale thread, I am going to double post another point I think needs to be made.

Glenn Nye has done more for veterans in 6 months then Thelma Drake was able to accomplish in 6 years.

I disagree. However, she’s not running again, what’s your point? That Nye did a good thing? Well, I agree on that.

I’m patting myself on the back for success in getting a candidate that was good enough to run Thelma out of office.

I was willing to vote for Bozo the Clown against Thelma because of her support for the so called Fair Tax. I am particularly pleased that Glenn is not proving to be a Bozo.

If you Republicans want the Veteran vote, prove it. Thelma didn’t deliver the goods, but Glenn is delivering. Why vote for promises undelivered (Republican) when you can vote for the man who delivers?

In case you are unaware, Glenn also sponsored a passed amendment in the stimulus bill that gives employers tax credits for employing veterans. Yeah haw, Glenn Nye is certainly pro veteran. Results instead of only words.

I am only patting myself on the back. I did not vote for a clown. Now which Rush Limbaugh endorsed Bozo are you Republicans going to nominate to run against him?
