Tea Party Day!
By | Wednesday, April 15th, 2009 | Uncategorized

The day has finally arrived for America to show its representatives how it feels about taxes! Tea Parties are taking place all across America and Virginia. Check out the official site and find out where you can participate here in Virginia.

In Hampton Roads, the tea party goes from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Be sure to bring tea and/or pork rinds.

If you don’t actually get to go to a tea party today, you can still participate by sending a tea bag to your representatives. If you live in a district where the congressman consistently has voted against bailouts and higher taxes (such as Forbes, Wittman, and Goodlatte), I suggest you send your bag to Sen. Mark Warner or Sen. Jim Webb.

Word is Chick-Fil-A is giving away free tea with any purchase in support of Tea Party Day!

Someone told me that dumping tea in the Chesapeake Bay would actually improve its water quality.

    Can’t confirm that….

I am going to lift this quote from the Hampton Roads Tea Party link J.R. provided:

“It doesn’t matter if you are a low-tax, fair-tax or flat tax supporter. Our country is on a tipping point.”

I take it those in favor of a progressive tax were unwelcome.

I doubt these demonstrations will ever appeal to or influence me. Not as long as part of their message is that we need the Fair-tax or a flat tax. They do not need demonstrations to get their viewpoint heard. This viewpoint is adequately addressed by quite a few conservative talk radio hosts.

These talk radio audiences can drink the kool-aid if they want, but I am going to continue to defend the American Way. I define the American Way, when it comes to taxes, as being a progressive tax code. This was true even when that great Republican, Abraham Lincoln, first implemented an income tax to help pay for the civil war.

What exactly are these individuals protesting? I happened to be up at Treasury today and there was a group there, decent sized – probably 500-600 – protesting, the signs they were carrying were all over the board. Seems that more than anything the folks are just protesting having a Democratic President? Afterall, the tax code hasn’t changed since Bush was in office…? And, the tax rates are still less than Reagan left them.

LittleDavid, are you saying the American way didn’t start until the Civil War?

Further, did you not read the “low taxes” part? Personally, I do love the Fair Tax but, can you not favor a progressive tax AND be for lower taxes?

Lastly, if you think the Tea Parties are all about taxes you are uninformed or drinking the Kool-aid poured by overly defensive Democrats. It is also about over spending and the growth of government. These Tea Parties were open to anyone that felt the govt. was going too far on these issues. Are some Republicans “Johnny come lately”s because now there’s a Democrat in office? Oh, sure but, I wouldn’t turn them away for being hypocritical. There have been PLENTY of conservatives that have openly called Bush a socialist that grew the size of government. So, many Republicans have been there all along. How many times have you seen Kirwin criticize small govt. Republicans and Libertarians for allegedly pointing fingers more often at Republicans(RINOs) than they do Democrats? Yes, Obama’s current economic strategy is making things worse. We recognize that but, this is not all about him. This is about principle not personality.

David, given the number of votes for Obama…….don’t you think he may have gotten some tradionally Republican votes? After all, if Will Sessoms and Paul Lantiegne can be Republican and endorse Mark Warner…….
All this race baiting by the Left over these Tea Parties will only persuade some Obama voters that they were wrong for giving him a shot at our highest office. This is a real bad PR move to be attacking PEACEFUL Tax/Big Government protestors as racists.

    Britt Howard,

I watched Fox News coverage of the Tea Party protests. As the cameras panned the crowds there were many signs promoting the Fair-tax in the crowd (and the camera even zoomed in on a few of them).

I have nothing against low taxes and low spending. However if you are going to cut taxes then you need to cut spending. You need to convince the voters that if they insist on tax cuts, they must agree to decreased services (including defense) that they have grown accustomed to.

I am going to provide a caveat to the previous paragraph. While I consider myself a fiscal conservative (albeit a progressive tax, fiscal conservative) I have been convinced by both liberal and conservative economists that stimulus to the economy is required right now due to the extreme crisis we find ourselves in. The only real point of contention between liberal and conservative economists is what form the stimulus should be. Should it be spending increases or cutting taxes?

In my opinion either method works. Both result in increasing the deficit. One by increasing the outflow the other by decreasing the inflow.
