Republicans have advantage in 60th
By | Monday, April 6th, 2009 | Politics

The open-seat being vacated by Delegate Clarke Hogan (R-60) was set to be a true battle between the Democrats top-tier candidate Ted Bennett, a former delegate who was seeking a comeback and James Edmunds, a farmer and businessman.

But Bennett has now dropped out.

Bennett was facing a primary against David Guill, a member of the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors, but the favorite was certainly Bennett.

This race clearly now favors the Republican Edmunds who has a breadth of experience in conservation, federal boards, education, and business.

Please explain Edmunds’ experience, especially at the Federal level and education.

The candidate has served on the Virginia Board of Forestry and participated in the White House Conference on Cooperative Conservation in St. Louis during the Bush administration. He also served on the founding board of the Halifax Higher Education Foundation and dedicated a room to his family at the site, according to Thackston.

Edmunds has also hosted a number of hunts for Wounded Warriors, a national program to honor service members who fought and were wounded in the Iraq and Afghan wars.

A conservationist, Edmunds has received several national, state and local awards, including the Va. Chapter of Wildlife Organization. He is the recipient of the Willis Robertson Award for outstanding wildlife management and conservation. He also received the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Woodlands Award and an award from the Remington Firearms Company for his efforts as well, as an award from the Halifax County Soil and Water Board, Thackston said.

    1) A White House conference does not a ‘Federal Board’ make.

    2) Anyone can have a room dedicated to them at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center. All it takes is cash, of which the Edmunds family has plenty.

    3) His work with veterans is commendable, but not related to any Federal Board nor education.

    4) I see no reference to his experience with education.

I don’t think Guill will be the pushover you are expecting. True, his pockets aren’t as deep as Edmunds’ ‘old Halifax money,’ but he may surprise you.

This district cannot be won without winning Halifax County and I concede that Edmunds leads that at this by name recognition alone, but don’t book his train ticket to Richmond just yet. His name carries a lot of baggage that will hurt him with some voters.

If you think for a minute that Mr Guill has a chance of beating Mr Edmunds you are just kidding yourself . You must be a democrat that has gotten caught up in the last election the only way that Tom Perriello won was he had all of the Obama voters that put him in he will not be so lucky the next time around . Mr Edmunds has done alot for Halifax county including giving 82 acres to the county for a park. What has Mr Guill done for Charlotte county ?

I generally vote Democratic, but I’m not a member of the party. However, I fail to see why that’s important. I haven’t decided who I will support or vote for in this election. Going by their two speeches, I would say that Guill handled himself better and came across as more intelligent. I have no personal feelings about either of them, as I don’t really know them personally, I just don’t think the election will be the shoe in for Edmunds that some expect.

As far as what Guill has done for Charlotte County:

    News & Record (http://www.thenewsrecord.com/index.php/opinion/article/member_of_the_gang/):

“One thing I didn’t learn until later is that one of the leading opponents to the landfill project was Guill. His stance was hardly automatic. The county’s leadership mostly backed the project, pointing to the presumed economic benefits, and being a sleepy part of the county there was no guarantee that the majority of the Board of Supervisors would do anything to stop it. But Guill and like-minded opponents worked the angles and fought the good fight, and this looming blight on the community went down to defeat.”
