Virginia Beach Mayor Sessoms endorses Foster
By | Thursday, March 26th, 2009 | Politics

Mayor Will Sessoms, a Republican who defeated a two-decade-plus Democratic incumbent in Virginia Beach this past November while Barack Obama, Mark Warner and Glenn Nye were cruising to victory, just endorsed Dave Foster to be the GOP nominee for Virginia Attorney General.

“As mayor of Virginia Beach, I know that Dave Foster will be the Attorney General we need to cut red tape, bring jobs to Virginia and help get the economy moving again,” Sessoms said. “Dave will be an asset to the ticket that will help Bob McDonnell win in November, and be a great addition to his team as the next Attorney General for the Commonwealth.”

Anybody seen the Flyer with Sessoms and Foster? Getting an endorsement from a “strong” republican such as Sessoms has to mean an awful lot…. LOL

Will Sessoms also endorsed Mark Warner for Senate over Republican Jim Gilmore. The hired staff of the Sessoms’s campaign for mayor also had flyers showing Sessoms with Obama which were handed out at predominantly black precincts.

Such an endorsement of Foster may cause a bit of confusion.

Gilmore also got 34% of the vote statewide. Many, many Republicans didn’t vote for him. I think it’s a mistake to use support of Gilmore as a litmus test for being “Republican” in Virginia.

Many Republicans among the nonactivists public likely did not vote for Gilmore out of a misperception. This misperception being caused by an eternal campaign in the media to blame Gilmore for a NATIONAL recession that had nothing to do with his policies or the (labeled as evil) car tax relief. Ever since Gilmore eneacted the tax relief, the campaign started. As soon as he left office and was replaced by a Democrat, the attack went into high gear. Granted, I also fault Gilmore for not adequately defending his record. However, the rest of the RPV was also remiss in that.

There is a difference also. It is one thing to sit by and do nothing as one of your own is falsely blamed. It is one thing to even vote privately for the Democrat. However, Sessoms went the extra mile and publicly endorsed Democrat Mark Warner over REPUBLICAN Jim Gilmore. Perhaps that is perfectly fine to you but, it isn’t to me. Contrary to the BS that followed Jim Gilmore, his performance as governor was superior to most. Gilmore didn’t create the NATIONAL recession that also affected Va. Gilmore didn’t lie about taxes and push for record increases when there was evidence in April that state revenues were gaining to the point that tax increases weren’t needed, as Warner did.

We had a fantastic example of a conservative and many self interested RINOs allowed the public lynching of Gilmore as the Democrat party cheered.

What’s done is done. Sessoms has a full term to prove himself. However, he should wait a good long while and amass evidence of performance before thinking those past grievances won’t be held up in circumstances like this.
