Foster claims victory at Culpeper debate
By | Monday, March 16th, 2009 | Politics

This evening the GOP candidates for Attorney General sparred in Culpeper over a series of issues, including business. Dave Foster is the first to the spin room tonight claiming victory:

“With unemployment in our Commonwealth now at 6.4 per cent, the highest in 17 years, Virginians are looking for an Attorney General who will work to streamline regulations and cut red tape so businesses can bring new jobs to our state,” Foster said in a debate at Germanna Community College’s Daniel Technology Center, near here.

The public debate – the campaign’s fifth, and all of them won by Foster — was sponsored by the Republican organizations of Culpeper, Orange and Madison Counties.

“I was pleased with our performance tonight,” Foster said. “It is clear, after these five debates, that I am the only candidate for Attorney General with the background and experience to help Bob McDonnell and Bill Bolling bring new businesses and new jobs to Virginians.”

Foster is joining us this week on the VPOD podcast. Last week, we heard from Ken Cuccinelli.

Update: Cuccinelli’s response -

“Last night we had another debate and hilariously, within 10 minutes of the end, one of my opponents had blasted out a press release declaring victory! That’s silly of course, because we certainly won!

“The debate was well-run by the Madison, Orange and Culpeper Republican Committees and Women’s Clubs. It was very capably moderated by former Attorney General Jerry Kilgore (he knows a little something about the office), and it was attended by nearly 200 folks! It was great to see you all!

“Of course, now that the obligatory claims of victory are over, we’ll find out who really won on May 30th… where it counts!”

While I appreciate Mr. Foster’s zeal, I wonder if he listened to the crowd response last night before declaring himself the winner. While Foster seemed ot have the most campaign stickers on lapels in the room, he was not the one the crowd continually interrupted with applause or the one who got hoots, whistles and a hearty round from the whole room at the close. It was nice to see Senator Cuccinelli’s hard work, sense of humor and candidness win over the crowd!
