Jeff Frederick being pressured to resign as RPV chair
Several independent Republican sources confirm to Bearing Drift that members of the executive committee of the Republican Party of Virginia have approached Chairman Jeff Frederick to resign within 30 days.
Frederick, who has been much maligned recently because of his “mis-tweet” regarding power sharing in the State Senate and his comments regarding Charles Darwin, faces major budget shortfalls at RPV, which have led to staff lay-offs (according to another source, certain positions were always meant to be phased-out after the GA session).
State central members say that asking Frederick to resign is not due to any political disagreements, but that poor fundraising, the loss of three congressional seats and the US Senate last November, and his preference to use a technology firm which he has a personal interest in have caused the loss of confidence.
Because of the above, and combined with Frederick’s propensity to create controversy with his comments, nearly all of the State Senate Republicans and many of his former colleagues in the House Republican Caucus are also eager to see the chairman out.
Of course, there is no love lost between Speaker Howell and the Fredericks after Mrs. Amy Frederick lambasted the Speaker in a letter last year.
State central members are being cautious about creating alarm within the party and publicly denouncing Frederick, but a vast majority are unhappy with the chairman and would like to see him leave.

Well, now what?
Chris,
I would, if you didn’t take six months to update it.
EDM,
As I continue to follow this story, looks like a few options:
1) Frederick resigns
2) Frederick calls for an election for chairman at the convention
3) Frederick forcibly removed
With 75% of the SCC wanting Jeff to play John the Baptist, it looks like 1 and 3 are the most likely, with 1 being the preferred course.
If he goes with 2, it’s quite gutsy and would send all sorts of messages.
Jeff Frederick needs to continue to do the job that a majority of state delegates freely elected him to do. He is right about Charles Darwin and the atheists need to leave him alone. He cannot be blamed for the loss of the US Senate seat last November because the candidate was fatally flawed because he was just another watered-down Republican who believes in abortion and big government. Obviously, many Republicans still do not get it: that what voters want is a conservative who actually stands for something and is not trying to be a Democrat-light! Frederick has values and that scares some neo-Republicans. We should support Frederick and encourage him to stay the course. Nothing else is acceptable.

Frederick has values??? That’s a good one – like what, he’s all for one and one for all? He has becomae a national embarrassment – the sooner he’s gone the better. Although the story now is that he’ll fight this to the bitter end. More selfishness from this idiot.
[...] Bearing Drift broke the news that the State Central Committee has given Jeff Frederick thirty days to resign as Chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia. The reasoning is due to poor fundraising and questionable ties with his technology firm, not to mention the loss of a U.S. Senate seat and three Congressional seats. Although, it may be too early to make the call, especially since he has only been in for a few months (hardly enough time to revive an already sinking ship). Freakin’ PLEASE!!!
How does Jeff Frederick get blamed for all of that???
First, Frederick was elected in the midst of an upheaval. The GOP bleeding was in mid-course. You don’t turn a team around that is geared to lose already on a dime.
1) The Mis-tweet was something about nothing. The GOP in it’s urgency to stab Frederick in the back, lost an opportunity.
There weren’t going to be any defections but, there was potential for Democrat caucus trouble at the most.
Did Frederick act too early and before he had good information? What did he know and when did he know it?
One thing is crystal clear! The Democrats had some internal confusion going on. Raising the topic BEFORE it was resolved would highlight it and make best possible use of the weakness.
Too bad the Republicans and RINOs were too damn busy rushing to gore Jeff Frederick when they should have been taking advantage of chaos on the other side of the aisle. The RPV clearly is still not over it’s infatuation with suicide.
2)Gilmore’s defeat had multiple causes, nothing to do with Jeff Frederick
A. Gilmore refused to aggressively defend his record as Governor after the media bashing started.
B. Most importantly, THE RPV refused to aggressively defend Gilmore. Too many RINOs were too happy to silently stand by and ensure losses for the GOP and have the public come to believe the repeated lies in the press about Gilmore.
C. Warner having fresh out of the mansion connections, fawning sicophants in the press, and a DNC looking for a big gain, had plenty going for him going up against a falsely maligned Gilmore.
D. The Obama factor
3) Charles Darwin comments? Please. Which party is the Religious Right in again? It is hard to tell. I expect Jeff to be criticized by the Democrats for taking a shot at the Evolution theorist. Why is it that RPV members attack him so readily on it as well? I believe in evolution, I just believe God invented it. So, I won’t agree with Jeff on everything but, I don’t get you guys.
As a Libertarian that left the GOP in frustration years ago, I get chided for criticizing the RPV more than I do the Democrats. Maybe I’m bitter about feeling the need to leave the party and that leads to my additional RPV attention. To be honest though, why should I criticize the RPV. The RPV does that enough on its own accord. Tigers eating their young. Keep this up and the Republican Party may be the next victim of “natural selection”.
4)Losing seats? Again, the country was turning from Republicans for a multitude of reasons before Jeff Frederick was chair. Additionally, some of those congressional seats were lost only due to the Obama factor. Obama backlash could easily put, the GOP back in seats recently lost by Drake and Goode. Again, the GOP should blame itself for Gilmore’s loss. Damage prior to Frederick.
5)Fund raising? Give me a break!! Smell the freakin’ RINO coffee!! You guys were on the down swing of the pendulum. Money goes to percieved winners. Just ask Marky Warner. The people were fed up with years of Republicans governing like socialist lites. Too much exposure and then infatuation with “Big Government”. Jeff Frederick comes in to turn things around and you blame him for what you already allowed to happen?
I encourage Jeff Frederick to stand against the pressure. Be a leader and face down this internal cancer. No, Jeff is hardly perfect but, he’s far better than he’s given credit for.
Last comment:
Is it sentiment? Memories of Reagan? Why does a Libertarian like me that defected from a diseased Republican party even care that this is happening? As a third party member, I should be rejoicing at the self-destruction of one of the dominant parties. Right? Somehow, I’m very disappointed and I’m not sure why.
Britt Howard,
Let me quote you:
“As a Libertarian that left the GOP in frustration years ago…”
Why are you involving yourself in an internecine squabble now?
Attacking Jeff Fredrick for the “Darwin” incident, shows where the division in our party is eminating from.
Loudon Insider exoriated Fredrick for the incident. So I left a comment on his blog and asked if he disagreed with Fredrick’s delivery or with the substance of what he said, I never got an answer.
People can criticize Fredrick for the organization, that’s a fair debate to have, however, the mindless attacks against his true statement about Darwin’s theories, shows our party’s weakness.
Ronald Reagan was unafraid to discuss his opinion on “touchy” topics. He even took heat from the media for mentioning the Biblical battle of Armageddon. The section of the GOP that gorged Fredrick for this reason will cost our party in the future unless we stop this kind of mess.
With that being said, Fredrick has made some mistakes, and the state central members know more about what is happening behind the scenes than I do.
Understanding that all sides have some valid points here, it is generally bad form to be employing the circular firing squad if you want to win elections. Frederick never had a bad word to say in public about a fellow Republican- and he was goaded about it plenty. I’d take someone like that over these folks who are trying to break Reagan’s 11th commandment for personal gain.
We lost this election because the party was not with the times technologically. Regardless of what happens to Jeff- and his investment in tech together with his willingness to be VERY open and responsive to communication have been welcome- the reforms MUST stay and continue. And I have severe doubts that the committee can continue them on their own.
There are bigger issues that needed addressing that Hager would never have done on his own. The process of addressing them needs to continue regardless of who is chair. But it seems that to oust someone who is making the correct reforms for lack of results -during the worst year nationally for the GOP in 25 years- after 8 months is premature. Show me the brazen agent of change who will do a better job. If there isn’t someone, making a change just to make a change seems silly.
STOP THIS POTENTIAL SUICIDE NOW!
Good grief. He just gets dumber and dumber.
Britt Howard makes a mutitude of valid points. I wish others had his insight.
So Steve, do you really not believe in evolution? And you wonder why a majority of educated voters think the GOP has been hijacked by relgious extremists? I took issue with his words and his awful stutterring and sputtering delivery, and let’s not forget he was plaigerizing froma website without given attribution. Frederick has become a complete and utter embarassment and distraction. He should step down for the good of the party, but I expect him to worry about himself and try to stick around. He’ll be finished by the time this is over, although I guess he’ll keep a following of dedicated wingnuts.
So Frederick very publicly came out against evolution? (By the way I am a theistic evolutionist. God created mankind through evolution.)
OK, I get my vote. I am not a member of the Republican Party, but neither is Britt Howard and he seems to get a vote. Let’s ride Frederick out of town on a rail. He’s an embarrassment to the Republican Party and an example of why they have been losing statewide elections recently.
If I am deprived of a vote now, I can always solace that I get my vote on election day.
Little David, I don’t get a vote.
Just voicing my disgust over the situation. The difference is that somewhere deep, I still hold affection for the GOP. Against the interests of my current party, I don’t want to see the RPV implode. I’m not sure you’d be too concerned about it, though.
I’m concerned because I want the Republican Party to come up with reasonable alternatives to the Democrats.
We’ve got to keep our Democrats inline, and if the Republican Party offers good alternatives this will be easier. But if the Republican Party is going to solidify around a core of extremists?
Take evolution for example. If God did not create mankind through evolution, he evidently wanted us to believe in it. If the world is only a few thousands of years old, God created the fossils that would mislead mankind into believing the world is billions of years old. If I am going to be mislead, I am going to trust in believing in the evidence God provided that mislead me. I am going to trust in God.
I just have a real problem with anyone who argues as a bigot against evolution.
We believers are the bedrock of the Republican Party. We can get along with everybody, but it is foolish to poke us in the eye. I trust Jeff was not doing that. We need to get on with beating the liberals and taking back Virginia!
Bishop,
I’ll poke you in the eye if you are going to insist the world is only a few thousand years old. The world God created proves otherwise.
Of course I might be wrong. I might be a fool. But if I am fooled it is God who provided the evidence to fool me.
Let’s worship the Lord, honestly. If someone is going to make a fool of us, who better should it be then God Himself?
Better God then the Devil right?
Loudon Insider,
No, I do not believe in evolution. I believe that God created the world, I accept that by faith just as you except evolution by faith. There have been no credible missing links found and the theory of evolution violates the second law of thermodynamics.
That debate is for another time. I have not said that I am fully in Jeff Fredericks camp. It is clear, however, that the ramblings of a handful of moderate Republicans have blown otherwise benign arguements completely out of proportion, not just on the Frederick issue but on other issues as well.
As far as the whole “religious extremist” arguement, an MSNBC poll showed that just over 30% of Americans believe in the Darwinian theory of evolution. You won’t read this in a government school textbook, but Charles Darwin was a supremisist who believe that some races were more “evolved” than others. While his theory’s proponents call creationists unintelligent.
Steven Osborne,
Interesting that you will even introduce the second law of thermodynamics into the discussion. Was this law provided to you by the Bible or did you come upon this somewhere else?
If you are willing to accept human laws about thermodynamics, what causes you to reject other human ideas? I’m just wondering what causes you to draw the line and where the line is drawn.
Little David,
The second law of thermodynamics has been experiemented on and proven. Can you prove evolution? The second law of thermodynamics states that everything heads toward a state of decay. Hence why we get old. It is a law that the Bible discussed before science even considered the theory. The Bible states that the earth waxes old like a garment. The Bible stated this theory before man ever did. The theory of evolution states that creatures become more genetically advanced over time, this is a contradiction.
I take the Bible literally. If you disagree with me, I am not going to say that you are unintelligent, I will simply disagree. The whole line about creationists being unintelligent was devised by the ACLU lawyer during the Scopes Trial.
Steven Osborne,
OK, from the Bible, Luke Chapter 16 beginning with the first verse, the parable of the Shrewd Manager. In this parable, Jesus praised the thief. You are familiar with this parable aren’t you? I guess it is OK to steal from your employer. Doesn’t sound very American to me, but the Bible is infallible so American values are wrong.
Little David,
The Bible does not contradict American Values. In this parable, Jesus is not commending the thief, rather he is urging His disciples to be as tenacious for the cause of righteousness as this wicked servant was for the cause of mammon. He did not condone the wicked behavior, but noted the tenacity that this man showed in his deception.
While I realize that this a little off topic, I think that it should be pointed out that the Bible is not antagonistic to science, but rather has set the basis for some of the greatest scientific discoveries in human history.
There have always been “scientific” theories that contradicted the Biblical account of creation. Yet one of the greatest scientists in human history, Sir Isaac Newton, the man who discovered the law of gravity, believed the Biblical account of creation.
It is sad to see the condescending disdain in which some people say, “you don’t believe in evolution!,” evolution is not a scientific law, even Darwin himself stated that it was only a theory. It is time to slaughter this sacred cow and take a new approach to how we view natural history.
How we got to this from Jeff Frederick, is simply amazing.(lol)
Steven Osborne,
How we got to this is because Jeff Frederick twittered against evolution. Apparently at least some Republicans think this is an embarrassment.
As for your interpretation of the parable I disagree. The owner of the estate (standing in for Jesus) commends the manager for being shrewd (the Catholic Bible uses the word prudent) for having stolen from him.
Jesus did not condemn the thief for being wicked, he praised him. Go read it again.
By the way, the present Pope (maybe you do give any authority to the Pope, but some people do) thinks evolution is more then just a hypothesis.
No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he eill hold to one, and despise the othe. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. – Luke 16:13
Jesus made it very clear at the end of this parable that His ways were to be sought after and not mammon’s. Earlier in the Bible God’s law states that we should not steal, he even gave a penalty for it! Jesus would not tell his followers to break His own law.
I believe that the Bible is literal, for years people said that the Hittite civilization did not exist, they said that the Bible was wrong. Archeology eventually uncovered the Hittite ruins and the Hittites were located exactly were the Bible said they were. I guess that we will have to agree to disagree on that matter.
Our nation must be careful not to engage in moral relativism. Fresh, new ideas are birthed out of principle. I like to see leaders step up and state what they believe even when they know that they will get criticized by members of their own party. Regardless of what you think of Frederick, that is a trait that we should applaud in our leaders.
A RPV Chair who has had a very poor record this far and who is seen by many as divisive has been asked by a majority of the committee members to resign. We’re facing a year where we will win back the governor’s mansion (and our candidate wants the chairman to resign) and need to put in place the campaigns to take back a couple Congressional seats. Not to mention our economy is in the tank and we’re seeing a radical shift in policy on any number of levels. This is a distraction we don’t need, and it will stay a distraction if the chairman doesn’t resign. There’s no way around it.
And the majority of these comments on this blog are about evolution vs. creationism and the literal interpretation of the Bible. And you wonder why people would accuse the RPV of being out of touch…
Chris,
The voters that we will need to reach to win this election are religiously motivated. Our party has the potential to expand into the hispanic community, and statistics show that over 50% of hispanic voters rate abortion as a “very important” issue. This is not just GOP hispanics, this is among all hispanic voters. It would be folly for us to ignore these issues.
The state central committee made it quite clear that it was not Chairman Frederick’s policy positions that they had a problem with, but rather his management skills. Some are trying to tie a rejection of Chairman Frederick to a rejection of cultural conservatism. That is why this discussion is happening.
Steven Osborne,
But the majority of Hispanic voters are Roman Catholic and the Pope does not share the hatred of evolution exhibited amongst many evangelicals.
Why don’t we just announce that the RPV Chairmanship is a one year term.
Seems like it is anyway.
The statistics speak for themselves, the people of Virginia are culturally conservative. Past elections have shown that our party ignores that fact at it’s own peril. Our party has been in a leadership vaccum concerning it’s principles for a long time, there are a handful of people who are culturally liberal Republicans who seek to lead our party in the wrong direction. This would explain their foam-at-the-mouth response to people like Ken Cuccinelli and Bob Marshall.
We can argue logistics, but if someone seeks to fill our party’s leadership vaccum with a bunch of fluff and no principles, we will further drive away young people, who have become more pro-life due to the advancements in sonograms, and also Hispanics voters; a clear majority of whom are culturally conservative. It does not sit well with the vast amount of culturally conservative independents when they see a Chairman ousted based on the fact that he gave a speech agreeing with them on evolution. Now if it is made clear that the ousting is based SOLELY on things like fundraising numbers then we may be able to get through this with our political capital intact.
Steven Osborne,
You stated:
“The statistics speak for themselves, the people of Virginia are culturally conservative.”
Yup, you are right if you are talking about the Gay Marriage amendment. But if you are speaking about state wide elections between Republicans and Democrats, here recently you seem to be wrong.
Are Republicans going to retreat to a core constituency and accept even larger minorities? Or are they going to come out swinging and contest for the moderate voter?
Little David,
Why do you think that Gov. Kaine tried to act like a social moderate, or why did Barack Obama try to change the subject away from the “divisive” cultural issues? They know that when Republicans campaign and then govern as cultural conservatives, along with being fiscally conservative, that the majority of independents vote for competent leadership.
The majority of independents are not moderate when it comes to the culture. That is why the liberal leadership of the Democratic party is trying to either change the subject, or move the populace left. The latter has thus far failed to succeed.
The best thing that Republicans can do for themselves now is to do what Ken Cuccinelli has done, campaign as a competent candidate with strong morals. If the Republican party engages in moral relevancy it will turn the majority of Virginians off.
Just to let Little David and Steven know, there are also people that were turned off by Bush that adored him in his first term. I’m one of those.
Bush is culturally more conservative than I am. Didn’t really matter to me. What did matter was the free spending Bush administration that even without the war in Iraq, eclipsed the Clinton years significantly. The sad thing is that in his first term, spending was a good idea. It was a proper timing for “stimulating the economy” unfortunately, Bush and the Congress quickly became addicted and couldn’t stop using the national credit card.
Obviously, my core issues are fiscal conservatism and opposition to a growing “Big Government”.
People like me are tired of the false choice between a Democrat and liberal RINO in elephant clothing. It has gotten so bad, I just assume have the guy that isn’t lying about being a liberal get the win. In short, many of us are willing to walk away if all you will offer is an ever so slightly more palatable $#!T sandwich than the other guy.
There are some circumstances where the Democrat is actually more fically conservative than the GOP offering.
IF and I do mean IF, because it sure isn’t evident, if the RPV wants to survive, they had better realize there is culture component and a small govt. fiscal conservative component that will just stay home or worse if you cross that line in the sand too far and too many times.
Dividing the party is not the answer, unless you want to lose.
But hey, go ahead. Eat your own and implode. The Democrats will gladly jump into your empty seats. If you can’t do your job, the Libertarians will be waiting while you go the way of the Whigs.

“We the People” are just going to have to keep giving the Republican Party a dose of truth until they are humiliated into embracing principles and honesty. It isn’t enough that they lost the state to the Democrats in the Presidential election, Gilmore lost his senatorial race to Mark Warner and that Hagar lost his chairman seat to Frederick. People have had it with the tricks and traps of this party. They humiliated Dr. Ron Paul last year, likely stole Bob Marshall’s election at the state convention, abused the rights of the Ron Paul delegates to assemble together at the national convention by taking their signs and buttons, and now they have succeeded in ousting Jeff Frederick, the first Hispanic chairman.
Do you all see the handwriting on the wall? This party, from the highest echelons to the small town political realm, is waging war against anyone who dares to restore the party back to its conservative values. They have issued yet another blow against liberty and the sovereignty of our country. Even the so-called conservative media are doing their best to neutralize our liberty movement by creating phony movements. Gilmore recently created some kind of “Patriot” organization, Glenn Beck is dazzling conservative listeners with his mixed messages and starting similar kinds of organizations. Fox News reporters are forced to discuss terms like “New World Order” and “global currency”. This is the oldest trick in the book to regain power of any political organization — Neutralize the opposition!
It is common practice for globalist controlled organizations like the Republican and Democrat parties to snuff out any threat to their agenda. With genuine patriot movements on the increase, Ron Paul’s Campaign for Liberty being one of the largest, it means that citizens are questioning the false left/right paradigm. This false left/right fight is what has kept the elite in power. The true patriot groups represent a severe threat to the current order. It is clear to me that the word is being handed down from top levels of both Republican and Democrat parties that they keep their movements in check and not to let them get out of hand. Hence, neutralize the so-called “fringe” part of the party. The Democrats appear to have succeeded at this but the Republicans are having some difficulty with the liberty and patriot movements springing up all over the country.
I am offended by that term “fringe”! Yet, this is the image that the media continues to portray of those who speak out against tyranny (eugenics programs such as abortion, global governance and currency, unjustified wars, etc). The only reason some Republicans keep using the term “fringe” is because they are brainwashed by Fox News media, who mock freedom and liberty minded people. Yesterday, I spoke with Jeff supporters who were upset about his ousting. Yet they both voted for Gilmore and pledged to vote for McDonnell. They both told me that I would be a part of the problem if I didn’t take a stand for the party and vote for ANY Republican who could beat a Democrat. They practically threw “principles” out of the window. Talk about Doublethink! I explained to them that I will take a stand and vote my principles. I also explained to them that I would rather see the Republican Party burn down and be rebuilt from scratch with true conservative and liberty minded people who are able to THINK for themselves. Yes, these two folks support voting for the lesser of two evils to maintain Republican power by any means necessary. One supporter explained that Ron Paul’s message is good but some supporters are a little too passionate. The supporter also said that Ron Paul was selfish for having us not support Republicans (good or bad) when they run against Democrats and that Paul was basically using us to maintain his power. Complete Doublethink! He basically suggested that Paul had less than honest motives and had a good message simultaneously — the same thing that Fox News does every day. Strangely enough, Paul doesn’t have to be a congressman and doesn’t even take the Government’s health insurance package. Paul actually cares about this country!
Folks, we had better start hitting our neighborhood streets and warn and educate our politically sleeping citizens to get involved in the Republican conventions to out number the doublethinking Republicans. And I mean yesterday! We are going to have to have a mob of 1000 people join each unit committee in one day for every 6 months with one agenda– to oust all of the old guard. Otherwise, we are going to lose any fight to restore principles back to this party and we will always have Republican Heckle or Democrat Jekyll running our country into destruction. As it is now, the most unprincipled characters are being elected by many Republicans who are conditioned to think as Fox News thinks, and who lack the backbone to stand for principles. It is an endless cycle of the blind supporting the blind. All will fall in a ditch. They have the numbers and we Constitutional loving Republicans DO NOT. We can’t convince all of these establishment Republicans to embrace liberty and freedom as many are conditioned to think this way and many will never change even with the current threats to our sovereignty. Sadly enough, these Republicans are in a hypnotized cult like state of mind like the characters in “1984″ who shouted “BE! BE! BE”!
Actions taken during Ron Paul’s Presidential Campaign, need to be revved up!
The statements made by Tony on the Jeff Frederick issue inflicted some truth-pain, as he spoke from the heart http://hamptonroads.com/2009/04/virginia-gop-removes-frederick-state-chairman. Now Ashleigh and I have inflicted some truth-pain in the following article: http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/V/VA_VIRGINIA_REPUBLICANS_FREDERICK_VAOL-?SITE=VASTR&SECTION=STATE&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2009-04-04-18-50-51. While the Republicans scramble to fix their image problem, the Democrats will continue to control it all and push through their version of a new order. If this happens, hopefully more compromising Republicans will begin to understand what the liberty movements have been saying. I’m convinced that the more the Republicans lose, they will be forced to accept the warnings of this community. But first they must take off their blinders and be brave enough to better understand who really controls the two major parties.
The Republican Party needs yet another severe blow to get it right!
