DPVA uses local officials to grandstand on stimulus bill
By JR Hoeft | Friday, February 27th, 2009 | PolicyApparently the DPVA needs to do a little less grandstanding and a little more research.
They sent out a press release and held a conference call today that was predicated on one single question: Will Bob McDonnell, as governor, take the federal stimulus money?
If they knew how to read (probably the failure of our unionized public schools), they would already know the answer. From Christina Nuckols most recent column:
Republican Bob McDonnell is the lone critic, saying “This bill contains significant categories of spending that may do little to help the economy.”
McDonnell has praised GOP congressional members who voted against the plan, saying the increased debt “is not going to be good long-term for America,” but he says he believes Virginia should collect its share of the stimulus anyway.
And why wouldn’t he? It’s still taxpayer money. If the federal government is going to take in from Virginians anyway, we should at least get it back in the state.

I think you’re wrong about the stimulus. Bob McDonnell is Republicans’ best opportunity to stop the bleeding from the 2006 and 2008 elections, in Virginia and nationwide. However he will not win if he decides to run to the left like this Washington Post article suggests: (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/virginiapolitics/2009/02/mcdonnell_would_accept_stimulu.html). In it he says that if elected he will take federal stimulus money “to the maximum degree as possible.”
We need real conservative leadership to get our economy back on track and that begins by saying no to Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid’s pork-laden trillion dollar spending bill.
Fiscal conservatives should email Paul Jost (pjost@cfsgsa.org) at the Virginia chapter of the Club for Growth and tell him to ask McDonnell to stand with Eric Cantor and Bobby Jindal and oppose a massive spending bill that will saddle our children with debt and force states to pay for more handouts for the unemployed.
Bob McDonnell needs to decide if he is going to stand with conservatives or with the liberals who are spending America to death. Which side is he on?
McDonnell should not walk, but run away from Paul Jost. If this money is going out anyway to all states, Virginia must get its share. To refuse it would be political suicide.
