Results from the 46th – Herring wins
By JR Hoeft | Tuesday, January 13th, 2009 | PoliticsResults are beginning to come in from the 46th. Low turnout as expected.
With 50% reporting, only 3% turnout. And the margin is 20 votes.
With only absentee ballots left to be counted in both Fairfax and Alexandria, Herring has a 150 vote lead. I would be surprised if that changed…so congratulations to Del.-elect Herring.
But even more so, kudos to Joe Murray on an outstanding and very surprising campaign.

I would hold onto your hats. There is a potential of tons of AB ballots.
Wow! Final tally shows a difference of only 17 votes. What an incredible race by Murray. This shouldn’t have been even close.
Even more, what does it say about Brian Moran that he can barely deliver his district for the Democrat?
go Joe go!
Wow. That was really close. I guess our goal in nova from now on is to make all the elections into special elections.

Subject: Election Results Update
Dear Friends,
I’ve been overwhelmed by all of your support and prayers over the last few weeks. This campaign for the House of Delegates has been a great experience for me, Katie and Ella. We’ve met so many great neighbors throughout our legislative district.
As you may have seen, the vote total is very close-a mere 16 votes separate me from my opponent, less than one percent of all votes cast. Election officials are still meeting to finalize the results and review the preliminary reports from precincts. Because of this, we’re looking closely at their work and comparing it to the observations of the volunteers we had at each polling location. Pending this review, we may consider requesting a recount.
I will keep you posted on the outcome of the race, but no matter how it turns out, I will continue to be so grateful for the experience and for the friendship you have all shown me and my family.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Joe
Interesting comments from Tim Craig’s post on the race:
Jim, maybe next time you won’t be so quick on the trigger to say the Dems won?
Have I been disproved yet?
A landslide in the 81st and a virtual tie in Northern Virginia.
The traditional rebound after a Presidential election loss has begun, as it always does.
Tom Whitmore just sent out notice that the House is not seating Herring at this point because of the count being too close to officially call yet!
Even if we didn’t officially take this one, we’re making our headway and proving our point. We can do this!
And yes, I think that we, as Virginia Republicans, should use every bit of this to our goal. It’s the first step to reaching it.
The lesson, of course, is that winners get complacent. And there are consequences for that.
But if y’all want to think that it’s that NoVA is in play, have at it.
