harold_and_kumar_escapeWe are all pretty used to politicians breaking their promises but one Obama seems intent to keep is shutting down Guantanamo Bay. After “guests” of Camp X-Ray were catered to for up to 5 years without being charged with a crime, it is time to close an embarrassing chapter on the Bush Administration. Without a doubt there are dangerous prisoners in US custody and holding trials for them will be difficult given the nature of the evidence against them. Finding a new home for the 250 inmates will be complicated as well, even though housing the inmates within the US will cost half as much as Gitmo ($259/day vs $657/day).

Watching some of the latest episodes of 24 (not sure if it’s a drama or comedy but entertaining nonetheless), it seems as though even Hollywood wants us to believe it is okay to torture a bad guy or two. Obama has a long way to go to repair our image abroad but I do believe this is a good and reasonable first step and I hope this is one campaign promise he keeps.

When he does away with the Platt Amendment then that will be something.

maybe we can kill two birds with one stone by returning Gitmo with the enemy combatants still there.
