Recount official in the 5th; Republicans announce targeted races for 2010
By | Wednesday, December 17th, 2008 | Politics

The leftosphere is all a-Twitter with self-congratulations over the official recount victory (which we actually called a month ago) of Rep-elect Tom Periello.

Congrats to the new congressman who finds himself, as does Rep-elect Glenn Nye (D2), in one of the most conservative districts in the country.

To paraphrase Sen. Bluto Blutarsky: “My advice to you is to start raising money heavily.”

Periello officially won by a mere 727 votes.

Arr Arr. Just remember “talk like a pirate day” and put TWO “r’s” in Perriello.
Goode WAS easier to spell (if not understand….)

The reality is that some overseas ballots that were sent in late by the Pentagon were thrown out. How many there were or whether it would have mattered, we will never know.

Correction to my last comment. There were 63 and although the majority went for Virgil it was not enough.

With that being said, Tom Perriello ran a very vague campaign and like Obama kept his positions largely under wraps. He ran a very good campaign however, and I only hope he will govern as good as he campaigned.

If Virginia 2nd is so conservative why did Thelma Drake face such competitive races every time? While it took Glenn Nye to unseat her (perhaps riding on the coat tails of Obama) Phil Kellam came close and had no one’s coat tails to ride on.

If Glenn Nye does a decent job up in Washington and Republicans counter with a right wing extremist I’d imagine that incumbent Glenn will achieve reelection. However if Republicans learn something from recent Democratic successes and nominate a moderate, things could get real interesting.

Personally, it is going to take a lot of gaffes from Glenn for him to lose my vote. He has earned my gratitude/loyalty in being willing to take on Thelma and by gosh actually achieving success in running her out of office.

But I might not be a good indicator of how the vote two years from now will go. Other voters might not be as forgiving if Glenn does not stick to the center. His margin of victory was not that large.

So, will Goode run in 2010?

    I think that he should.

If he does not I think that Del. Kathy Byron would make a good congressional candidate.

There is already some signs of fallout. Goode did not run a particularly strong campaign and Periello capitalized on the Obama infrastructure but many now whom I have spoken to have a bit of buyers remorse. many were unaware of the ties to people like George Soros and the NY connnections that never seem to get dissimilated to the population until after the election. Another aspect is the coattail effect of Obama but in 2010 there will be none and will turnout be as high with voters that supported Tom solely because he was the (D) on the ballot below Obama.
