I have mixed feelings after watching that video. On one hand I feel good that American engineering and ingenuity is alive and well. But I feel worried that we can’t implement our great ideas in the homeland. When the automakers return to DC, I hope they specifically bring the points made in this video up from a competitive advantage standpoint.
Awesome video Jim. This really highlights the potential downsides of our unionized industries, and the unfortunate consequences of the adversarial system that often results. On the one hand, almost all the modern workplace protections enjoyed by all US citizens owe their implementation originally to labor unions. Our society as whole has benefitted greatly from the changing perceptions unions have made in what passes for an acceptable working environment. However, in this era of globalization, the cost of unions becomes more obvious. It’s ironic really, in many ways the weakening of unions and the gradual shift in perceptions is the result of their own historical achievments.
But here is an interesting point.
I think the bailout of the Big Three is a given. Some have said that the Big Three should sell off assets as a condition for the bailout.
Is it right to demand they sell off, in the present depressed economy, revenue producing assets? Would not the long term financial health of the resulting enterprise be risked?
As a taxpayer I am not unwilling to give the assembly line worker just as much help as I give the Wall Street executive. However I am not willing to shovel money down an empty pit.
I’m just starting to wonder when the red ink is going to stop. Somebody better be a genius enough to convince me that eventually we are not going to have to start printing worthless dollars to finance these bailouts.
I sure hope Obama is that genius. Whether or not you voted for him for President, he is the President we’re going to have. I pray he is up to the task in front of him.
