Open-thread: Who are you voting for U.S. Representative?
|
|
For the next few days, we’ll have open threads where you can make your case for who should represent us.
In this thread, who do you think should be serving in the U.S. House of Representatives?
Important note: please build an argument as to WHY you feel the way you do.

Frank Wolf - leader on human rights issues…
Thelma Drake has to be my choice on Nov. 4th to again represent the 2nd District in Congress
When it comes to obtaining energy independence we can count on Drake to pursue ALL energy resources instead of only a few designed to relieve us of our vehicles and force us to ride horses, buses, and light rail. Rep. Thelma Drake understands a need for a strong national security and energy independence is a part of that as well.
In a world where the “Big Government” crowd has been trying to find a way to confiscate our incomes and property, it is good to know that Rep. Thelma Drake is opposed to eminent domain abuse for the sake of “economic development”. She knows all to well what it is like to have the government take your property and not give you full value for it.
We face a strong potential for a Democrat White House. We have to face the fact that defense spending may be cut. The economy here in Hampton Roads may not be too rosey and has certainly been harmed by city council overspending, overdevelopment and adventures in regional government but, the strong presence of the military has served as a buffer and protected us from a worse case scenario. Likewise, Virginia and America may need Thelma Drake as a buffer to a liberal White House.
Unfortunately, Drake’s record for individual liberties other than property rights(eminent domain) and the 2nd amendment are sorely lacking. While National Security is a great concern, her blind faith in the unpatriotic Patriot Act, warrantless wiretapping (sorry Thelma but talking to a known terrorist is indeed instant “probable cause” and it is quite easy to get an emergency warrant at 3 am.), and National IDs’ beyond our drivers licenses, birth certificates, and Passports is indeed troubling. Given to how the Clinton administration was inappropriately making use of FBI files of EVERY REPUBLICAN, one would think Drake would realize that we have a Constitution and a Warrant process for a reason!
Although Drake does have negatives, they pale in comparison to her opponent Glenn Nye. Nye postures at serious moves to energy independence. He simply can not be counted on to fight for it like Drake already has.
Glenn Nye lacks Drake’s experience.
Glenn Nye can not be counted on to fight his own party when it comes to making a strong US military a top priority. We could hope he would be like Owen Pickett and strongly defend the military but, that is…….hope. Drake is a known qauntity on this issue.
Thelma Drake gives faint support for the Fair Tax and prefers a “flat tax” for some odd reason. However, she did sign on as a co-sponsor to the Fair Tax Bill while her opponent proved his ignorance of the bill and general fiscal issues when he openly attacked Fair Tax. I know the DNC contributes anti Fair Tax funding support, they certainly ran a commercial for Kellam last time. Kellam indeed lost votes by not condemning the ad. Nye goes further though and personally attacks Fair Tax. Nye’s poor grasp of fiscal issues should be viewed as dangerous. When his party is poised to raise taxes could we count on Glenn Nye to oppose them?
Rep.Thelma Drake is hardly perfect but, is a solid pick for the upcoming political enviornment we are likely to face.
Glenn Nye is a chance we can not afford to take.

Virgil Goode will get my vote. I have supported him when he was a Democrat, Independent and now as a Republican. The letter behind his name does not matter to me, it is what he believes in and how he votes for what is right for the district.
I understand his voting. and will continue to support him. He has recently been thru the mud all because someone called the local newspaper with a tip of something that happend 5 years ago and it has grown into a media circus. They have slammed Virgil for all kinds of things but he has been a real trooper. He will get to the bottom of it all. I feel he will be vindicated in the whole matter and the 5th district will survive and so will Virgil.

I have voted absentee for Thelma Drake in the 2nd. She has always been a very responsive and accessible Representative to my family over the last four years, and she has earned my vote for another term.
Thelma Drake in the 2nd.
