Open-thread: Who are you voting for president?
|
|
For the next few days, we’ll have open threads where you can make your case for who should represent us.
In this thread, who do you think should be our next president?
Important note: please build an argument as to WHY you feel the way you do.

Since John McCain of 2000 is MIA and his policies have taken a far-right turn (among many other things) my vote is for Barack Obama.
He has the organization as shown by his ground game and tight lips among everyone from his staff to his volunteers.
He is eloquent at a time when we need someone in the White House that can form a complete sentence.
He is determined as seen by his victory over the “unbeatable” Clinton Machine.
He will surround himself with the best and brightest and bring everyone along for the ride. His campaign is about the most inclusive thing I’ve ever seen. He gets slack for it, unbelievably.
He is a shining light in politics and stands up for John McCain when the other side attempts, time and again, to rip him to shreds over the tritest of calls.
I care about experience, but I think his judgment matters more. We need a breath of fresh air, and now is the perfect time to open the windows.
Go Obama 2008
I support John McCain because I truly believe in the American system of government, and while government has grown in recent years, it’s not a socialist government.
I believe John McCain will veto spending that’s out of line.
I believe John McCain knows government isn’t the answer to lowering health care costs.
John McCain doesn’t think that Americans go to work every day for government to take what they earn and spread it around to those who didn’t.
We learned that lesson on this continent long before we became a nation.
Government needs funding to do the services that the people demand, and those with more will naturally shoulder more of the burden.
But taxing some people to write checks to other people is legalized robbery. John McCain understands that.
On Tuesday, I will happily be casting my vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden. In this, I vote both for the Democratic Party and for their selected candidates. As one holding predominantly liberal views, I find that the platform of the Democratic Party is currently more in sync with my own worldview than that of the Republican Party. And while that alone may have been enough to get me to pull the lever, it is this ticket in particular which has me excited to do more than just vote.
The last eight years have brought us two open-ended wars, a great diminishing of international goodwill, an economy in crisis, bitter polarization and partisanship at home, and a growing distrust in the honesty and probity of our elected officials. And that’s just a few of the challenges our new president will face. In all of these challenges, I believe Barack Obama is uniquely suited to put our nation on the right path.
His opposition to the Iraq War and his support for the war in Afghanistan show, to my mind, a good understanding of the true battle against fundamentalist anti-Americanism. The enthusiastic reception his candidacy has received abroad is unprecedented, and I believe his mere election will restore some of the goodwill we have lost over the last eight years. Add to that his understanding of the useful role of engagement in foreign policy, the value of which the isolationist and unilateral Bush administration only seems recently to be recognizing, and I believe his administration will do much to restore our standing in the international community and reverse much of the anti-American sentiment that has been growing worldwide.
Domestically, his association with economists from the prestigious University of Chicago, as well his broad support by others respected in the government (Volker) and business (Buffet and Schmidt) communities, give weight to an economic policy based on realism instead of pure ideology. Also, his policies reflect an attention to new information and ideas (behavioral economics and increased ties between infrastructure and economy) that look forward instead of backwards. And while this election has brought out some of the worst in partisanship, I truly believe that an Obama administration will demonstrate a propensity to work “across the aisle”, and will push to find solutions that address the concerns of all Americans, and are not driven by narrow ideologies. It is my true hope also that an Obama administration will set new standards in openness and accountability, and counter much of the growing mistrust from the abuses of power we have come to consider commonplace in the last 8 years.
If I have any reservation, it is regarding the cult of personality that has built up around Obama, due to the perfect storm of race, rhetorical ability, and his seemingly innate ability to inspire people. This aspect of his candidacy is the one thing that makes me uncomfortable. Such power can easily be used or abused, as history has shown. Many of our greatest and most influential presidents had a similar following, but so have some of the world’s worst dictators. However, I feel the risk of any abuse is minimal, both from what I believe about Obama himself, and my faith in our own system of government and the citizenry who enable it.
Already voted.. Absentee… Plus Ohio has early voting (and the Sec. of State makes sure that event fake registrations count. She is turning it from the Buckeye State to the ACORN state.
Voted McCain
Tomorrow I’ll be proudly casting my vote for John McCain and Sarah Palin.
While McCain was not my first choice in the GOP primary, he remains the best, and only secure, choice in this election. There’s just too much we don’t know about Barack Obama. And what we do know is scary enough.
John McCain brings experience and an understanding of the issues. He knows what it will take to get our economy moving again. He understands our national defense and the threats our country faces. He’ll protect the lives of the unborn. He’ll freeze government spending. And he’s not afraid to tick off people on both sides of the aisle to do it.
McCain brings with him Governor Sarah Palin. A breath of fresh air that has energized the Republican Party. Governor Palin is hope that the GOP can remember just what it means to be a Republican. She’s a proven reformer and a Washington outsider. And that’s a good thing.
My “official” endorsement is here: http://thewritesideofmybrain.com/?p=1973
McCain. Barack Hussein Obama is a liberal socialist (I know that is redundant but it needs to be spelled out). He will threaten the Republic by corrupting the 2012 election more than he has cheated on the 2008.
Insanity is often defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. This year you have an opportunity to reject the failed policies of the two major political parties and instead cast your vote for real change – this year you can stop doing the same thing over and over and “hope” for “change”. This year you can vote Libertarian. You can vote for Bob Barr as our next President of the United States.
For far too long the Democratic Party and the Republican Party have abandoned their principles, abandoned the U.S. Constitution, and abandoned the American people.
Our nation cannot return to a path of strict Constitutional government, lower taxes, greater respect for property rights, and government that protects our individual liberty if we continue to allow ourselves to be duped into voting for a false Hobson’s choice because we are deceived into believing there is a meaningful difference between the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. They are two wings on the same bird, one left and one right. Each wing is working in concert with the other to infringe upon our liberties, seize our property, and lead our nation further down the path towards globalism, socialism, and fascism.
Over the years much of the damage done to our nation has been the result of activist Supreme Court justices. Who you choose for President will decide the nominees submitted for consideration to serve on our Supreme Court. It is likely as many as four justices may retire during the next four years. The last few decades of our Supreme Court has been chosen by the collaboration between the Republican and Democratic parties.
Recently our property rights were severely violated by the Kelo vs. New London decision – a horrific Supreme Court decision that clearly violates the intentions of the framers of our Constitution to institute our government with its proper role being to protect our property rights, not act as an all-powerful “partner” with private developers to force us to surrender our homes and businesses for the sake of “economic development”. Bob Barr will not appoint justices to the Supreme Court that will not strictly interpret the Constitituation as it was written. Barack Omaba will. John McCain will to. John McCain supported the repression of our individual political free speech with his active support for the McCain-Fiengold “campaign finance reform” bill (i.e. the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (BCRA), Public Law 107-155 107th Congress.).
As the two major political parties continue to lead our nation into financial ruin, destroying capitalism and our free markets, we have just witnessed the most catastrophic abuse of our federal government we have ever seen; that being the “Wall Street Bailout Bill” which was passed to “rescue” private banks and lending institutions due to their agreement to make and then resell bad loans for over valued properties. Folks, those mortgage contracts are a private matter between the parities involved and they are not the responsibility of the American taxpayers to “bail out”.
Both Senator McCain and Senator Obama voted for this blatant abuse of our tax dollars and our federal government. Sadly, President Bush signed this bill into law. You see, it does matter who we elect as President. Bob Barr vehemently opposed the “Wall Street Bailout Bill”. Bob Barr understands the free market and the proper role of our Federal Government. Bob Barr has one major objective when he is elected to serve our nation as our President. His primary objective is to restore our Federal government to the limitations as defined by our Constitution and to reduce Federal spending and lower taxes for the American people.
The difference between Bob Barr, Barack Obama, and John McCain is that you can believe Bob Barr when he tells you that he will reform Washington. Bob Barr isn’t a part of the “duopoly” of the oligarchy of the RNC and DNC political machine. Bob Barr is an American on a mission to return our nation to the Constitutional government that we are entitled to as citizens of our sovereign nation. Bob Barr is your chance to vote to protect your liberty, your property, and the future of your nation.
