Woman Attacked At ATM, Assailant Carves Letter Into Her Face

Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim’s car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter “B” into her face, Richard said.

Richard said the woman refused medical treatment after the assault, which happened outside the view of the bank’s surveillance cameras.

And remember, Obama said to “argue with neighbors, get in their face”:

UPDATE: Two Portland men were arrested after tossing a Molotov cocktail at a family’s John McCain campaign sign early Saturday morning.

UPDATE 2: Hoax – as Jeremy pointed out here when that side of the story broke.

UPDATE 3: Interesting look at the coverage of this event using Memorandum Colors.

I don’t know if this passes the smell test. She refused medical help? It happened “out of range of cameras”?

    Sounds suspicious.

  2. The Squeaky Wheel October 23, 2008 16:46 pm

Imagine for ONE moment this was a black man or woman who was attacked by a white man who carved an ‘M’ into the victim. There would be BREAKING news, and it would be on the front page of every paper. The likes of Sharpton and Jackson would be screaming on every TV station, calling for a march and ‘outraged’… McCain’s camp would be bullied to condemn this attack and Sharpton would DEMAND McCain call for calm.

But no, it wasn’t like that, so this will be seen as nothing and any calls for calm from Obama’s people will be seen as irrelevant and only political.

When this is talked about, just think to yourself, how would the reaction be different if a White Man attacked a Black Man or Black Woman and CARVED an ‘M’

  3. The Squeaky Wheel October 23, 2008 16:47 pm

M beat me to it. See. Now it is suspicious. Ask yourself the question… Would anyone DARE question it if the victim was black with an ‘M’ carved? Dount it.

  4. M October 23, 2008 16:51 pm

Just seems suspicious to me. If someone carved a letter in my face I would seek medical attention. Wouldn’t you?

  5. Jason Kenney October 23, 2008 16:53 pm

Allowing an EMT to treat you at the scene and refusing to go to the hospital counts as “refusing medical treatment” in many reports as does her choosing instead to drive herself to the hospital.

  6. M October 23, 2008 16:58 pm

I don’t know. Usually I see that mentioned as “she was treated at the scene” or “she was treated at the hospital.” Never heard of “refusing medical treatment” to mean anything but refusing medical treatment. Perhaps more details will emerge.

  7. Eng Esch October 23, 2008 17:29 pm

If true, it’s horrible and despicable.

But you cannot blame Obama for chrissakes! When a politician says “Get in their faces and argue” that is a far cry from “mug people and carve my initials into their face”!

I don’t get why you even posted that clip.

That’s just as horrifying, if you ask me.

  8. Eng Esch October 23, 2008 17:32 pm

…and I think the “left wing MSM” is definitely getting on this story, so PUHLEASE shut up with the whole “if it were a white man…” B.S.

I just heard it on FOX and MSNBC.

It’s also still developing, so anyone jumping to conclusions (left or right) is simply retarded.

  9. Mark October 23, 2008 20:07 pm

Politico and CNN are reporting it as well.

Not that this will stop the right from whining (about everything)…

  10. Cipher October 23, 2008 21:51 pm

Don’t you love when closet racist say….if it where a black person then “so and so”, or if it where a white person then “so and so”

Yesterday we asked why the media was reporting a McCain supporter calling Barack Obama an “Arab” and completely ignoring Obama supporters calling Sarah Palin a c*nt, even wearing T-shirts with the phrase “Sarah Palin is a c*nt” on them.

Police will administer a polygraph test after certain parts of her story don’t line up. Link and more later.

The idea that someone would do this to another person is horrible. The idea that someone would do this to themselves…

  14. Fay October 24, 2008 09:22 am

If this happened, it’s horrible. Nobody should go through this…However, a volunteer for Sen. Obama was assualted (punched in the face) last week, however, I didn’t hear anything from the MSM.

As for this story, I will wait until the investigation is complete because it seems strange to me. Why would a thief take their time to carve a ‘B’ in their victim’s face (doing it in a place where they could be caught)? I would like to hear what position this young woman was in and the alleged thief was in when this was happening?

  15. Fay October 24, 2008 09:28 am

Several months ago, there was on uproar from the right wing bloggers and the story was on the MSM, of a high school student, who reported that, while at school, she was attacked by several hispanic students, who threatened to rape her and they scratched her on her hands (she even did interviews telling how she was assaulted). Yea, the right wing was MAD as hell. When the investigation was complete, the little girl was caught on camera scratching herself….Yep, you get it right, she LIED…..

  16. Eng Esch October 24, 2008 09:36 am

My God! The Godless Press wouldn’t do anything, but what if a kangaroo did this to a pinecone, huh?!?

…that’s about all I hear whenever I hear folks scream about one race or another. STFU people.

  17. PRG October 24, 2008 10:01 am

Have you seen the pictures of the woman? CNN.com has one. That sets off a lot of alarms.

–The “B” doesn’t look like a cut at all, especially from an angry man attacking an unwilling victim. The skin isn’t broken, and it’s pretty uniform. It looks like a scrape.

–Her black eye looks more than a little like makeup. No swelling? Anywhere?

–The “B” is backwards. So either the guy is dyslexic, or it was done in a mirror.

While I feel like a slime for saying this, I think she faked the attack to get attention.

I can’t criticize either campaign for crazy assholes doing stupid crap. The country’s too big and there’s too many people. You think there aren’t a few McCain supporters out there who’ve done violent, stupid things? Of course there are. No shortage of idiots in this world.

  18. Jeremy Hinton October 24, 2008 10:16 am

Wow, even Michelle Malkin’s not quite buying it.

  19. Fay October 24, 2008 10:21 am

MSNBC just answered one of my questions. That is, in what position was the attacker when he carved the ‘B’…it appears that he was facing her, with his knees on her chest. If this is the case, how on earth would he carved the ‘B’ backwards?

  20. JAB October 24, 2008 13:03 pm

I don’t believe it so I have to say LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE on this one. The girl refused medical help(that is odd, I would’ve tooken that help, and wanted to find out if my face was damaged let alone my eyes). Secondly, noone was around which makes it very strange, and at a ATM money from her would have been tooken. The law need to make her take a lie detector test, and she probaly fail it. This is an tactic orchestrated by the Republican party. They are trying to make the black race look violent and attach it Barack Obama. Dirty people always find dirty tactics.

  21. kelly October 24, 2008 13:12 pm

I have three words for this idiot. LIE DETECTOR TEST! I do not believe this woman was attacked. I’m no law enforcement agent, but I hope the law can see straight through this woman. This is what happens when we have our first black president going into office. A lot of KKK come out of the woodworks. They are too cowardly to do it themselves, so they pay some idiot to do it for them. This is a cowardly attempt to slander barrack’s name. Oy by the way, I’m a proud white female, and I strongly support Barrack Obama. The B was too carefully carved. If you’re being attacked you should be kicking and screaming, and therefore the “B” should not be that perfectly in her face. If the police do not look into this, I will make sure they do. This pisses me off that some nut will do this to themselves all because we finally have our first black president in office. Lay down haters, because Barrack is going to win. I’m in virginia, and its been 40 years since we went democratic, and now we’re going there all because of Barrack Obama. Let it go haters, there is nothing you can do.

  22. MB October 24, 2008 13:58 pm

She’s confessed to making it all up.

(C’mon, if this didn’t set off your BS detector the first time you saw it, you’ve got a tough life in front of you.)

(And that last bit isn’t so much an “update” as it is an attempt change the subject once you’ve figured out that you’ve been suckered. Hold on to what you can, I guess.)

So when do we get a retraction for this distraction?

  24. Sean Holihan October 24, 2008 14:44 pm

What surprises me is that this somehow passed anyone’s smell test?

Come on guys, this blog is to good to carry this trash. Especially now that she’s admitted to faking it.

  25. Dave Towers October 24, 2008 14:49 pm

Police confirm she is a liar. Please keep pushing this story, your clear support of criminal hoaxes is inspirational.

  26. Jeremy Hinton October 24, 2008 15:15 pm

Folks, please. I just published a new post regarding the fraudulent nature of the claim. I’m quite sure the delay in posting the update was in no way an attempt to “keep pushing the story”. If you notice, none of the more conservative contributors have commented on this thread. Had they been aware of the latest revelations and in a position to publish an update, I’m quite sure they would have beaten me to the punch.

    BREAKING NEWS…HILARIOUS!

(CNN) — A Republican campaign worker who told police she was assaulted by a man angered by a John McCain sticker on her car admitted she made up the report, the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, assistant police chief said Friday.

Police say Ashley Todd, 20, admitted making up the report she was attacked because of a McCain sticker.

Ashley Todd, 20, of College Park, Texas, will be charged with filing a false police report, a misdemeanor, and may face more charges, said police spokeswoman Diane Richard at a news conference.

“This has wasted so much time. … It’s just a lot of wasted man hours,” Assistant Police Chief Maurita Bryant said at the same briefing.

The woman told investigators a man approached her Wednesday night at an ATM in Pittsburgh’s East End, put a blade to her neck and demanded money, Richard said.

Police said they found “several inconsistencies” in Todd’s statement and she was not seen in surveillance videos taken at the ATM. She was asked to take a polygraph test Friday morning, Richard said. The results were not made public.

Later, Todd came to the police station to help work on a composite sketch of the alleged attacker. When she arrived, Todd “told them she just wanted to tell the truth” — that she was not robbed, and there was no attacker, Bryant said.

Todd originally told police a man “punched her in the back of the head, knocking her to the ground, and he continued to punch and kick her while threatening to teach her a lesson for being a McCain supporter,” according to a police statement.

The woman also told police her attacker “called her a lot of names and stated that ‘You are going to be a Barack supporter,’ at which time she states he sat on her chest, pinning both her hands down with his knees, and scratched into her face a backward letter ‘B’ on the right side of her face using what she believed to be a very dull knife.”

Bryant described Todd as “very cordial, polite, cooperating,” and said the woman was surprised by all the media attention. Asked whether the false report was politically motivated, Bryant replied, “It’s difficult to say.”

“She is stating that she was in her vehicle driving around, and she came up with this idea,” she said. “She said she has prior mental problems and doesn’t know how the backward letter ‘B’ got on her face.”

However, Todd was the only one in the vehicle, and “when she saw the ‘B’ she thought she must have been the one who did it,” Bryant said.

“We’re talking with the district attorney’s office and conferring on just how we’re going to handle it,” she said. “It’s been different stories through the night and this morning.”

She said there was no indication that anyone else was involved.

Richard said the woman had described her alleged attacker as an African-American, 6 feet 4 inches tall with a medium build and short dark hair, wearing dark clothing and shiny shoes.

Before the revelation that the report was false, McCain spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker said that McCain and running mate Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin “spoke to the victim and her family after learning about the incident.”

The Obama campaign also had issued a statement wishing the woman a “speedy recovery.”

To quote Ms. Emily Litella: “Never mind”

  29. kelly October 24, 2008 20:09 pm

So the sickooo lied! This is a crazy world we live in, but Barrack’s character tell it all, he still sent his speedy recovery. I like to meet her for about 10 minutes, so she can tell a true story of an assault. I’m not a violent person, but this woman is not crazy, but the person behind this told her to act crazy if she get caught. I stlll feel someone of importance is behind this. This go to show how far people will go to try and ruin Barrack’s chance of winning. Trash is everywhere, too bad this did not work out. The closer we get to election, the more nuts will come from under their rocks.

  30. Mark October 26, 2008 10:50 am

    Kelly,
Now that is a little paranoid. The woman has a history of mental illness. I an Obama supporter, and don’t put much past a republican campaign in desparation, but I can’t read much more into this than a young woman in serious need of help.

I’ve been having fun reading the right-wing blogs dealing with having to retract incendiary posts. I’ve seen a lot of “Yeah but it COULD have happeneds” and “it doesn’t detract from the other incidents” type responses.

Both sides have extreme nutcases, and it says nothing about the candiates either way.
