McCain/Palin Fueling Hatred? So Says Schaeffer…
By | Saturday, October 11th, 2008 | Politics

To be clear up front… I would never suggest that McCain/Palin supporters in general are haters of any kind. In fact, some of my favorite people are contributors to this blog (Jim, Shaun, Jason- the jury’s still out on Brian the Squeaky Wheel), which is decidedly pro-McCain/Palin. I just thought this was an interesting op-ed from Frank Schaeffer, whether you love him or hate him.

And I know that many, if not most, of the regulars who check this blog would readily denounce such hate. That’s the optimist in me…

McCain’s attacks fuel dangerous hatred
By Frank Schaeffer
October 10, 2008

John McCain: If your campaign does not stop equating Sen. Barack Obama with terrorism, questioning his patriotism and portraying Mr. Obama as “not one of us,” I accuse you of deliberately feeding the most unhinged elements of our society the red meat of hate, and therefore of potentially instigating violence.

McCain and Palin are sending mixed signals. First they attempt to drive perception that Obama is an ally to terrorists who hates the military, and then McCain says that people don’t have to be afraid of Obama as president.

McCain has allowed his campaign to fuel the fires of rage, widening the divide in the race for the presidency, plummeting it to the level of those which occur in unstable nations, supporting the mob mentality.

  2. Brian Kirwin October 11, 2008 18:42 pm

Joel, if you want to see the “fires of rage” read VBDems for about 3 seconds.

The followers of politics like many of us junkies have to find it ironic that because we have a candidate on the ticket(palin) that is willing to connect the dots and willing to draw sharp contrast or at least point things out that all Americans should have the opportunity to think critically about, but there in lies the difference. Those Democrats at VBDems and Raising Kaine are far left liberals “progresives” who have no vested interest in challenging Democrats to think critically, they merely want Democrats to follow. Accept the candidates that the media or the elites in the DNC select through manipulating the process without questioning and then of course sit back in sience when that nominess vacates positions they endorse and moves straight to the center pledging (pandering) for the General. Its perfectly acceptable for Obama to move towards clean coal for example after two years of backing the no coal radicals like Raising Kaine. Is Obama the same candidate from the Primary? Why is it we are not afforded the answers to those questions? I would love someone on the other side make the case that someone picked McCain in the process and backed him in the media the way in which they did Obama and now of course its the right that are fueling hate, but Obama surrogates who played the race card against Bill Clinton and indirectly Hillary Clinton were innocent of any such hate baiting.
There are those who may say that conservatism is dieing a slow death now, but what I think is dieing faster in any real faith in journalism at all. Even the historic Sunday morning shows are now moving towards the more “entertainment” version of media, where exploiting for political gain is becoming the norm. Within ten years , journalism will be dead and all those pundits now who are former campaign insiders will be hosting those programs that based on reputation were always objective, but how can these pundits suddenly pivot and move from being partisan to being objective; they can’t and the networks like MSNBC/NBC know it.
It will be interesting to see where the storylines will go should Obama win. Will the affirmative actions premises they throw in our faces cease to exist, will there be an admission that there really is equally opportunity here or will we see a push for even more quotas throughout society. Why is it not recognized that it is these ideals that “widen the divide” .
Its perfectly fine for Code Pink to behave in the manner in which they do, but when those not aligned with the lefts agenda are criticized for exercising the very right every veteran in this country has defended. Its all about content, if they approve it its fine and if they do not than its divisive.
In the end, are they saying anyhting about Ayers, Wright, Kenya, Voting Records that isn’t true? Or is it the political reality od such truths that these liberals fear. But then again, these are the same people that will sit and watch the videos of Frank, Waters and Todd and then act as if they knew nothing about the financial crisis we are in. I wonder which is worse; passionate free speech or political denial thought.

Andof course coincidentally one of the most influential civil rights leaders plays the, say it with me, RACE CARD… Gee, we haven’t seen that since, well, since Dems dared questioned the “Chosen One” in their primaries…

Have to love the “new” style of politics… Change… as in “When questioned, we will CHANGE the topic with the Race Card”

  5. Jeremy Hinton October 11, 2008 21:14 pm

Fresh from the You Can’t Make This Stuff Up dept, we have the invocation at a McCain rally in Iowa today, courtesy of the WSJ

“There are millions of people around this world praying to their god — whether it’s Hindu, Buddha, Allah — that his [McCain’s] opponent wins, for a variety of reasons. And Lord, I pray that you would guard your own reputation because they’re going to think that their god is bigger than you if that happens. So I pray that you will step forward and honor your own name in all that happens between now and Election Day.”

  6. FrenchytheSailor October 11, 2008 21:32 pm

Wow, I didn’t know God was a Republican.

  7. Mark October 12, 2008 00:50 am

Just when you thought it couldn’t, the right has gone nuttier…

  8. Brian Kirwin October 12, 2008 11:07 am

Frenchy, God’s only a Republican because of the lack of any decent alternative.

The party of abortion makes Jesus kind of uncomfortable at rallies.

  9. Mark October 12, 2008 11:24 am

If you are going to be arrogant enough to speak for Christ, I wonder, do you think that He would be any more comfortable with the the party that thinks the golden rule is actually about gold, the party of war, disenfranchisement of the poor, torture and execution? Seems to me that the Bible has some stuff in there about exactly those issues…. hmmmmm…

  10. Brian Kirwin October 12, 2008 12:58 pm

Namecalling? Good Mark. Now go enjoy your cookies and milk.

  11. Shane McNulty October 12, 2008 13:07 pm

Apparently Jesus also is uncomfortable with that whole “freedom of choice” his dad gave us.

  12. Brian Kirwin October 12, 2008 13:13 pm

Shane, are you saying that God endorsed abortion?

  13. Shane McNulty October 12, 2008 13:18 pm

He is creator of all things, right?

I mean, do you get to be picky about what God makes?

  14. Brian Kirwin October 12, 2008 13:54 pm

Another win for our side. Thanks for playing, Shane.

    Sometimes it’s too easy.

  15. Shane McNulty October 12, 2008 14:04 pm

So you “win” because God made abortion?

    Wow… enjoy that prize.

  16. FrenchyTheSailor October 12, 2008 14:17 pm

Brian – God’s a Republican? Really!? I didn’t know they were around 6,000 years ago.

Umm, maybe we’ve got the the name wrong, and we should be calling Him “Gop”. Has a nice ring don’t you think.

  17. Brian Kirwin October 12, 2008 14:39 pm

    Shane, God didn’t make abortion.

One thing I wonder is how people who are pro-choice on abortion would’ve felt if their mothers were too.

  18. Shane McNulty October 12, 2008 15:21 pm

God didn’t? So God didn’t make all things? When did that happen?

And very interesting to learn that God finds fault with abortion but apparently has no qualms about preemptive war where thousands are killed. And here I thought the commandment was “You shall not murder” I didn’t realize there was an “…unless…” that followed.

  19. FrenchyTheSailor October 12, 2008 15:36 pm

    Brian – Shane,

This little segue in to absurdity has finially crystalized my choice.

I’m not voting for either party.

Instead, I’m going to wait it out and then do everything I can to support who ever is elected President.

The only thing I really care about is the future of this country. And all this division with in the country only supports our enemies.

Bin Laden must be laughing in his cave. He never has to do anything again expect watch us destroy our country from with in.

    This is stupid!

  20. Brian Kirwin October 12, 2008 16:08 pm

    Frenchy, good comment.

    Shane, therapy.

  21. Darrell -- Chesapeake October 12, 2008 17:23 pm

Sometimes browsing blogs is like looking at a fence covered in gang grafitti. Red and blue… Apt.

  22. Shane McNulty October 12, 2008 17:50 pm

Frenchy, as I’ve said on this board before, it doesn’t matter who wins this presidential election, it’s we the people who will lose. That said, I do believe there is a break point where just how badly we’ll get screwed can be considered and in that light I do still think Obama’s a less damaging choice for our country.

Brian, so you contend it’s somehow more well balanced and logical to argue how an invisible man in the clouds is taking political sides. That’s more than a little delusional. Wow… let me know how that works out for ya.

  23. Brian Kirwin October 12, 2008 18:33 pm

Nice to see your bigotry alive and well, Shane.

  24. Mark October 12, 2008 18:52 pm

Brian – you’re not as good at this as you think you are.

  25. Bam Haiku October 12, 2008 19:12 pm

I would tend to agree with Brian, god is Definitely a republican..just look at scripture…God created war, famine disease, wiped out humanity, plague, ..it goes on and on. Sounds like a Republican to me…now Jesus on the other hand, was most definitely a liberal. Helping the poor, separation of church and state, healing the sick, asking us to pray behind closed door and not in public.

Oh F.Y.I. God does endorse abortion..ask Pharoah.

  26. Brian Kirwin October 12, 2008 19:58 pm

Bam, when Jesus helped someone, he asked them to change as well.

Liberals don’t support that. They like people to remain needy, especially of government.

  27. Brian Kirwin October 12, 2008 20:00 pm

MarkRAGNARloser, I spend most of my Sundays wishing I was more like you, actually.

In fact, I plan on visiting Ghent more often to be even more like you.

  28. jennifer October 12, 2008 20:40 pm

    BACK ON TOPIC…

So a few angry McCain supporters make some stupid comments and it’s all over the news, yet the anger and derangement from the left has been ignored by the media.

There are SEVERAL of examples of liberal hatred here against McCain, Palin, and Bush:

    http://michellemalkin.com/2008/10/12/crush-the-obamedia-narrative-look-whos-gripped-by-insane-rage/

Who can say that they knew about THESE examples from the media reporting on them?

  29. Bam Haiku October 12, 2008 22:29 pm

You could go back and forth all night about the foolishness of supporters from both sides….

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKUovpF9LWU

And posting from Michelle Malkin, she is the hate queen..hell she holds so much self hatred for her own identity that it makes McCain/Palin supporters look like hippies.

  30. Jeremy Hinton October 12, 2008 22:30 pm

We’ve got our sickos on the left too, no doubt. Probably more of them to be honest, as there’ve been 8 years of Bush to get folks good and pissed off. So far though, they are not showing up at Obama rallies shouting out “Kill him!” or “terrorist” when Obama mentions McCain or Palin. Both are sick, but the latter starts to get into mob-mentality territory.

  31. Shane McNulty October 12, 2008 23:08 pm

Brian, I find it infinitely interesting that despite any various logical debates that are presented (by both sides) you automatically resort to personal attacks. Now, it’s obvious you never took much as far as debate instruction, that much became apparent by your appearance on Cathy Lewis’ show, but you really should learn to at least be respectful of other people, even if you disagree with their opinions.

I have no problems at all with you disagreeing with me, hell that’s what makes coming here interesting, but can you at least have the decency to try and keep your comments to the issue discussed? I know you obviously find me personally interesting, although I must confess, I’m kinda baffled as to why, but please, some of us are trying to have a conversation about issues.

I’m willing to extend benefit of the doubt that everyone who comes to this blog, no matter their religion or political belief, not only cares about this country but is also a mature, thoughtful human being who is willing to share their take on what’s going on.. I think that’s great and I thank JR for the forum, but the thought that your innate comments may in any way make someone feel unwelcome from posting is disgusting and shameful.

    I expect better.

  32. Brian Kirwin October 12, 2008 23:23 pm

Shane, it’s amazing how you accuse me of personal attacks while you personally attack me.

You call God “an invisible man in the clouds” and call me “delusional” for being religious.

Please teach me about being respectful of those with whom you disagree. You’re obviously a great example.

  33. Shane McNulty October 13, 2008 00:14 am

More of the same. And it’s funny, that seems to be a common mantra for you.

And you really have very selective reasoning, but fear not, I’ll illuminate the point for you

Here’s the quote from me you took issue with:

Brian, so you contend it’s somehow more well balanced and logical to argue how an invisible man in the clouds is taking political sides

See that “is taking political sides” ? That’s the delusional part I was referring to when you’re referencing what a deity prefers… and when it comes to religion I could care less what people believe. As far as I’m concerned, life’s short, do whatever makes you happy, and part of that is believing in whoever or whatever you want.

So once again you miss the point and return with personal fodder.

  34. Mark October 13, 2008 08:21 am

Brian – thanks for proving my point.

All you offer is personal attacks and slander – though, I guess that is the GOP playbook.

  35. Mark October 13, 2008 08:23 am

    Shane, see my last post.

Unfortunately you are attempting to engage someone in a thoughtful discussion whose worldview and thinking processes don’t move beyond right wing talking points.

    Don’t waste your time.

  36. Brian Kirwin October 13, 2008 10:48 am

Shane, if you think I was seriously giving God’s political views, you take these things way too seriously.

  37. Shane McNulty October 13, 2008 14:41 pm

Yeah Brian, I think you absolutely do believe you are proviiding God’s political beliefs.

In fact, I think you agree with me quite a bit on that.

  38. jennifer October 13, 2008 15:29 pm

“And posting from Michelle Malkin, she is the hate queen..hell she holds so much self hatred for her own identity that it makes McCain/Palin supporters look like hippies.”

Whatever. Is it because she doesn’t toe the “I’m a victim b/c I’m a “minority” line?”

Who care where the examples I posted are from. The links she provides speak for themselves.

BOTH SIDES have people who make deranged comments and do crazy acts, BUT WHAT does the mainstream media report more? THAT is the question.
