Support Your Local Registrar

If you are a prayin’ kind of person, then may I recommend you say a prayer for your registrar? They are by and large terrific people who love America, love democracy, and want more than anything to have a clean and smoothly-run election. So you have to ask why the ACLU is apparently trying to make the registrars’ jobs harder. Check out this link-rich post for shenanigans in Virginia. See also this from Virtucon. As always, the Anchoress is good. She has updates near the end of the site for voter fraud / ACORN nonsense, including Instapundit’s note that

“If the Baptists did what ACORN is doing…the press would be all over it, 24/7.”

Does anyone think the registrars are being given similar amounts of grief by groups favoring Republicans? Didn’t think so.

I’m not a big fan of ACORN when it comes to their voter registration methods. They’ve gotten into trouble often enough, and don’t seem able and/or willing to correct the problems. But its a sad constant that when it comed to voter fraud, both sides always have bad actors. Democrat supporting groups tend to “pad the rolls” with bogus registrations, while Republican groups go more for disenfranchising and preventing votes. Democrats usually get hit first, since most of their shenanigans happen during voter registration drives, while much of the Republican chicanary happens on election day at the polls. I expect we’ll see more from both sides here in VA before the race is over, considering the focus on our state.

Can you post up some proof on those claims, Jeremy? I’d like to see it.

For the Dems, ACORN tends to be the much maligned poster child. As they actually employ people for their registration drives (as opposed to volunteers), the profit incentive can cause their canvassers to, well, cut corners. ACORN often catches most of this, but some slides through. Fortunately, very little of this actually translates to actual voting irregularities, as noted in this 2007 New York Times article. As I said. the issue tends to be with registrations.

On the other side, this year we have the Michigan GOP attempting to block folks who’ve been forclosed on from voting. More voter challenge attempts in Montana. Some more good info on GOP voter caging here.

Shock of shocks, i consider voter suppression to be the much more serious issue.
