Survey: Small Business Owners Prefer McCain
A MerchantCircle survey of members finds that 54% of small business owners plan on voting for McCain/Palin despite nearly 53% saying the current administration has not adequately addressed their needs. 36% support Obama/Biden. While this is a far from scientific poll, it’s significant in that one can’t ignore small business owners but it also comes from a website that appeals to more tech savvy business owners, a group of the electorate many assume Obama has locked up. Unfortunately there are no dates attached to the survey so it’s hard to tell if this takes into account reaction to the $700 billion bailout package approved last week.
MerchantCircle includes some interesting data:
- Of those (1602 surveyed) who rated that the current administration has represented the interests of local business as “not well at all”, 75.3% indicate they will vote for Obama, 8.7% McCain, 11% don’t know; and 4.9% other.
- 55% have seen a “Severe” or “Moderate” decline in sales and revenue over the past year; 49.4% of McCain supporters versus 40% for Obama supporters.
- McCain had the largest margin of support from businesses with 21+ employees – 64.7% to Obama’s 27.8%. Businesses that identified themselves as having one employee had the closest margin of difference – 47.9% indicated they would vote for McCain to 42% who would vote for Obama.

Hey Jason, MerchantCircle conducted the study from September 25 to October 6th. And 80% of the business owners surveyed up to October 1, believed the bailout would either ‘not’ help out small businesses or ‘were not sure.’
I wonder if the numbers would be different after the 2nd debate, since we learned Obama wants to raise taxes on small business.
Actually, Obama doesn’t want to raise taxes on all small businesses, just those making more than $250K a year in profit. And even then it’s not a huge amount. I ain’t in that profitability camp, unfortunately. Any business owner with fewer than 5,000 employees and less than $10 mil in revenue would be crazy to vote for McCain. His policies will skew heavily toward big business, across the board. It’s Bush redux. If you like what’s happening to your bottom line now, vote for McSame.
good grief! they want an angry/rage filled dottering old man in charge? so called average joe six pack ‘hockey mom’ (unable to be coherent on any of the issues)with her 1+million dollar income a 72 yr. old heartbeat & 4x melanoma outbreak away from the presidency??
I for one am for innocence and statemanship. Research the Carlyle Group and see who is REALLY behind republican ticket.
Now THAT is scarey!
Growup folks, we are in BIG trouble.
Bonnie, why do you feel the need to take it to such a hateful personal level? Do you treat your father and/or grandfather with the same disrespect? Maybe you’re the angry/rage filled person. If you think Obama is full of innocence, you are in for a rude awakening. We are in big trouble no matter who gets elected, congress is who runs this country & they are not about to change.
