Nye has two primary residences?

Brian Kirwin | September 22, 2008 | Comments (21)

Thelma Drake questioned Democrat Glenn Nye’s “residences” in today’s media-filled Congressional Debate.

Nye bought a home in Washington DC in 2005 and receives a “homestead exemption” tax break on it by claiming it as his “primary residence.”

He also claimed another “primary residence” in Virginia, as he’s registered to vote in his sister’s house in Norfolk.

Drake wondered where he pays state income taxes, and also where does he truly live. DC seems to think it’s DC. Virginia seems to think it’s Virginia. Nye seems to think…..who knows?

Oddly, 2005 was also the time Nye stopped voting in Virginia, according to records supplied by the Drake Campaign.

Update: Listen to the following interview between Mike Gooding of WVEC-13 (ABC) and Candidate Nye where Nye admits that his DC residence, while declared as his primary and still claims as a homestead exemption, is not really where he lives.

Also, the WAVY-10 (NBC) and WVEC-13 (ABC) reports.

  1. Ah yes, yet another fantastic vetting job done by the Dems in the 2nd District.

Well, at least he never slapped a woman around in college.

The good news is, as long as her Realtors license is still good, Congresswoman Drake can help Glenn sell one of his houses.

  2. Nye grew up in Hampton Roads. He has family ties here. He left Hampton Roads to attend Georgetown where he graduated from the School of Foreign Service. He then served in the foreign service.

Drake grew up in Ohio, moved here to attend ODU. Didn’t graduate. She became a real estate agent.

  3. Jason Kenney says:

Joel – So Nye is out of touch with the Hampton Roads area of today?

  4. Cathy says:

    Nye is so screwed…

  5. Cathy says:

    This is irrelevant…

NYE CHEATED ON HIS TAXES! ITS AN ISSUE. GET OVER IT.

  6. J.R. Hoeft says:

Here’s what the Drake campaign is saying about this issue:

“Glenn Nye admitted to reporters today that he is falsely receiving the homestead deduction on a home he owns in Washington D.C. According to legal documents obtained from the DC Office of Tax and Revenue Glenn Nye bought a home in 2005 and took the homestead deduction – a 64,000 tax assessment deduction that is only eligible to DC homeowners who maintain their DC home as their primary residence. Today, Glenn Nye admitted to reporters that he is using the home as a rental property. We demand that Glenn Nye immediately refund the District of Columbia the back taxes that he owes for falsely taking the homestead deduction in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.”

According to the Government of the District of Columbia’s Office of Tax and Revenue Customer Service Administration eligibility for the Homestead Deduction is as follows:

To be eligible for the Homestead deduction you must: 1) own and reside in the property as your principal place of residence; (bold and italics in the original)… 3) complete an Affidavit stating that you have completed the document truthfully.

“By his own admission today, Glenn Nye has not fulfilled the eligibility requirements for the Homestead deduction. We call on Mr. Nye to pay the taxes he rightfully owes the Government of the District of Columbia.”

  7. [...] candidate Glenn Nye has two that he is calling his “primary” residence — one in D.C. and one in Virginia.  [...]

  8. Is he even eligible to run for office in the 2nd District?

  9. Notice how the college, or lack of, always seems to come up. Normally by elitist Liberals who then claim to be in touch with middle America.

Well, chew on this… A huge majority of Hampton Roads is made up of Military folks. Most military people did not complete college.

So when you list the lack of a college degree as a minus, are you trashing those who serve who do not have a degree as well?

Then, are you slmaming the vast majority of the UAW membership who do not have degrees?

    Snob

  10. Oh, and where is Drakes primary residence? You know, where she told the IRS?

    Now where is Nye’s?

  11. Brian Kirwin says:

So, Nye took a homestead exemption for a home he owns in Washington, and he says he rented the home out?

A rental property is NOT a primary residence.

Looks to me like he ducked some taxes and established residency in two different cities to take tax advantages.

Reid, I’m no lawyer, but I don’t know how you can run for office in Virginia if you claim residency in another state.

  12. [...] Bearing Drift tonight has audio and more of Glenn Nye admitting that he was for his primary residence in DC before he was against it. [...]

  13. Everyone needs to re-listen to the audio. Mike asks Nye a bunch of times if the DC home is his promary residence… He never answers it but says he is “From” the 2nd District.

My residence is in Columbus, but gee, I was born in and lived in Texas for awhile… Can I run for Congress there?

Seriously, did the Dems vet this guy? I mean did they even ask to look at his tax records for the past couple of years? Seriously, someone in the Dems should feel real stupid right now…

  14. J.R. says:

WAVY-10 just ran a story on this. Nye came on air and unequivocally stated that he had signed the property over to his brother in 2005.

If that’s the case, was he falsely making a tax deduction the past few years?

Also, how come Nye was not capable of answering his residency question at noon today, yet it took him until late tonight to record something?

Also, is he claiming a homestead exemption in a location that’s not Virginia? Which is fine, but it means he doesn’t live in Virginia. In which case, he should not be running for congress.

Or, is he falsely claiming the exemption while living in Virginia? Which means that he is, as someone wanting to become a law maker and decision maker of taxes, is falsifying his own filing.

Either way, this is not good for candidate Nye.

  15. Cathy says:

I listened to the audio again. Glenn Nye – who is 33 years old as he likes to remind us – lives with his adult sister and her family in their home – not his! What a dork!

  16. [...] candidate Glenn Nye has two that he is calling his “primary” residence — one in D.C. and one in Virginia.  [...]

  17. J.R. Hoeft says:

The Pilot does a good job of reporting on this too…here’s a key point:

The district’s law requires only that one owner live in the home to take advantage of the tax break, said Natalie Wilson, spokeswoman for the D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue.

Kent Nye moved into the house in December 2005, just after they bought it, and lived there until he went to Iraq in January 2007, said Glenn Nye, who lived there between State Department postings.

Kent Nye returned from his 21-month tour last week. Glenn Nye said the home, which they’ve rented out, is still his brother’s primary residence and that he is deciding if he will live there again or withdraw from the program.

What it sounds like to me is that Candidate Nye is stating that he is not living in the residence, but still gains some financial benefit from the tax deduction that his brother is entitled to.

  18. [...] yesterday’s debate between Glenn Nye and Rep. Thelma Drake (R-VA02), Drake asserted that Nye was purportedly doing something improper by taking a “homestead deduction” in Washington DC because he did not live [...]

  19. Re: Snob

While a college education should never be the only indicator of a person’s abilities, such as the ability to think critically, process complex information, etc., it certainly should be considered when attempting to understand what a person brings to any organization, public, private, political, whatever.

I love how whenever a “liberal” mentions higher education being a part of the qualifications for a candidate, the whole foundation of higher learning becomes a liberal mess to not worth considering to conservatives; but when a liberal actually asserts that the base of those with higher education is liberal, conservatives complain that their not being recognized for their education.

    …whatever.

Re: Nye bring out of touch with the 2nd District

Hmm…I swear I remember reading about and seeing pictures of Nye in a flak jacket along side our troops overseas. I dunno, I would think that being in those types of situations would make Nye more in touch with the military in Hampton Roads.

Joel, Dukakis rode in a tank. Didn’t impress anyone.
