Terrie Suit, a longtime friend, confided in me yesterday that she is, indeed, resigning from the General Assembly. In a letter to constituents which will be sent later today, Suit stated that :

This past year Tom retired from 27 years of military service which began in the US Marine Corps and culminated with his 21 years as a Navy SEAL. After 19 years of marriage, juggling deployment schedules with legislative schedules, and losing sleep during combat tours, we are finally ready for the quieter lives of private citizens.

Barry Knight, a local farmer, announced he will run in the special election. He was promptly endorsed by Suit:

“Barry is exactly the type of representative this district needs,” said Suit. “He is an honest, hard-working Virginian who believes in giving back to his community. His strong roots in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake help him understand the diverse needs of the 81st District. I am proud to support Barry as he campaigns for the House of Delegates.”

From Speaker Howell:

“Delegate Suit’s service to the people of Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, the Commonwealth, and the House of Delegates has been exceptional and exemplary. She has been a fierce and steadfast advocate for the people of the 81st District, as well as a prominent and effective champion for the men and women of the United States Armed Services.

“For House Republicans, Delegate Suit’s retirement is especially bittersweet. Her historic election in 1999 heralded Virginia’s first-ever Republican majority in the House of Delegates.

“During her nine years of service, Terrie Suit distinguished herself as one of the General Assembly’s most highly regarded members. It has been an honor to serve with her, and I know she will be missed by her colleagues.”
