Even Democratic “insiders” think Palin pick helps the GOP
By | Sunday, August 31st, 2008 | Politics

In the most recent National Journal blogger “insiders” poll, 50% of “left of center” bloggers said that Sen. John McCain’s selection of Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate on the Republican ticket will help at least a little. They join the 18 of 19 “right of center” bloggers who think the pick will help.

I stated the pick would help a lot and “that The energy that just has been given to conservatives is amazing. That energy has to transmit to the rest of the electorate. I have never seen a McCain event so electric and it’s all due to one person: Sarah Palin. Besides, she’s just so darn likable!”

I know…not the most intellectual argument I have ever made, but give me a little break: I was watching the event unfold on Friday as I was answering the poll question.

    J.R.,
Don’t worry about logic. I don’t think logic is going to run this election cycle. Seriously, if it was logic and not nostalgia, runaway emotions and/or wanting to make history, the Democrats would have nominated anyone other than Obama. And if Obama thought logically, he would have picked Hillary and not Biden as his running mate.

Besides, even conservatives are allowed to get swept away by emotion at times. It humanizes us.

“I have never seen a McCain event so electric and it’s all due to one person: Sarah Palin.”

    …not McCain.

I wonder just how long the energy from a VP pick can carry a presidential campaign.

This is big and I see it energizing many conservatives who might have been thinking like me.
I was undecided. (I know the MSM hears that they always think that means deciding between Dems and Reps, but I and many others would never, never vote for a 21st Century Democrat) I was undecided but it was between McCain and Baldwin (Constitution Party).
If McCain doesn’t screw up and somehow dis all the conservatives in the upcoming weeks, I’ll finally vote for him.
That’s what the Palin pick did, and I am not alone.

McCain will receive good short term lift from vp pick, and it also serves to dim the light from the Obama speech Thursday…….. interesting tid-bit from back in March/April… in the form of a question…
Who made the following comment/statement earlier this year…. “By the time gas hits $4 a gallon, the American public will be BEGGING for us to drill in ANWR and offshore, hell, in their back yard!” Was it:
    a) George W. Bush
    b) John McCain
    c) Dick Cheney
    d) Sarah Palin
    e) none of the above

There’s no doubt Palin will shore up and energize the social conservative base for McCain and also further alienate hard-core liberals – i can’t image anyone disputing that. The question is what aspects of her candidacy (her personality and story or her beliefs) get larger play in the media and what impact that will have on more moderate voters.

Palin on the ticket will do wonders to pull in the biggest unclaimed prize: Middle class white women.

    Kudos to McCain.
