Virginian-Pilot blasts Obama’s energy plan

I know they pledged not to endorse in this year’s Presidential race. We’re starting to see why.

Start with Democrat Barack Obama’s signature proposal, a $1,000 per-family rebate financed by a tax on oil company profits.

As satisfying as such financial vengeance might be, experience proves that windfall profits taxes don’t work and have magnificently disruptive effects on the marketplace.

Worse, Obama’s new proposal - the very definition of pandering - puts him in the position of calling for a gigantic tax on an industry for which he voted huge tax breaks in 2005. Sen. John McCain, the GOP standard-bearer, voted against them. (Virginian-Pilot)

We’re starting to see that when the gloss and shine of “yes we can” and “hope and change” become defined by proposals and policies, Obama’s a flop.

I love the “Pop Culture” tag!!

I am glad the “Pilot” gets Obama. Since when is “tax (especially Big Business) and spend” a change for Democrats? And definition of pandering? Great! The “Pilot” nails Obama!

Now is Obama going to accuse the paper of going negative or being unfair to him? If he doesn’t, that would be true change.

Hey Brian, you cut the quote too soon. The best part is the next 2 lines:

Still, that vote doesn’t immunize McCain from bad ideas. If his presidential energy policy push began in silliness - a widely derided gas tax-moratorium scheme - it has in some ways gotten worse with time.

Incidently, does anyone know if what Obama is suggesting is modeled more on the 1980 Windfall Profit Tax or the older wartime excess profits taxes? The recently blocked Consumer-First Energy Act looked more similar to the 1980 version, but Obama, Clinton, and McCain all missed the vote.

Jeremy, the Pilot bashing a Republican is standard fare. That they bashed Obama is remarkable!!

But keep playing! You’re bound to make a good point sooner or later.

So the Pilot has decided not to endorse anyone becuase they would have to be forced to endorse a Republican?

    Mature.
