Pundits say Cantor hasn’t served long enough to be VP

Both Stephen Farnsworth and Stuart Rothenberg, political commentators, chimed in on a report today by Tyler Whitley in RTD today, attesting that Eric Cantor is not ready to be VP because he has not served long enough.

Rothenberg said the Cantor choice doesn’t make sense. Though Cantor is regarded highly on Capitol Hill, his eight years of experience in Washington do not qualify him to be president, Rothenberg said.

Farnsworth, of George Mason University, continues the riff:

“Cantor is the sort of new face the party desperately needs, but is he really ready to be president?…Maybe it’s four years too early for him.”

Now, let’s see. Does this make any sense?

Cantor was elected to the House of Delegates in Virginia in 1991. Barack Obama was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1996, five years later.

Cantor was elected to the US Congress in 2000, and has subsequently been re-elected in 2002, 2004 and 2006. Obama was elected to the US Senate in 2004, and has never faced re-election.

So, Rothenberg and Farnsworth, care to re-think those comments about who is unready to serve?
