Obama’s starting to believe his own hype
By | Thursday, July 31st, 2008 | Politics

Did you happen to read Dana Milbank’s column in the WaPO yesterday? Here it is in summation:

As he marches toward Inauguration Day (Election Day is but a milestone on that path), Obama’s biggest challenger may not be Republican John McCain but rather his own hubris.

Obama’s new-found celebrity status prompted him to say to a room-full or adoring fellow Democratic lawmakers:

“This is the moment . . . that the world is waiting for,” adding: “I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions.”

Talk about ego! It’s only one of the things that prompted Milbank to lead his column:

Barack Obama has long been his party’s presumptive nominee. Now he’s becoming its presumptuous nominee.

Unfortunately there’s no recording or actual transcript of the talk. Some of the Dem’s present have released this version, which changes the tone a bit:

It has become increasingly clear in my travel, the campaign — that the crowds, the enthusiasm, 200,000 people in Berlin, is not about me at all. It’s about America. I have just become a symbol…

Thats a bit more ambiguous, and (like much of what obama says) has multiple interpretations. Still, he needs to be more careful. His years as a professor have produced a didactic bend to his speech patterns that only plays into this. This is a meme that has been circulating for a while, and it seems to have legs. Of course, its actually a strong line of attack, as not only does it use the Rovian “attack strengths as weakness” (turn Obama’s ability to inspire to hubris), it starts with a kernel of truth. Politics and arrogance almost always go hand in hand, and they play into other more attractive traits like conviction and steadfastness.
