The comments Barack Obama made in Missouri don’t need any further explanation; they stand on their own. And Rick Davis of the McCain Campaign was right to issue this simple response:
“Barack Obama has played the race card, and he played it from the bottom of the deck. It’s divisive, negative, shameful and wrong.”
Here’s what Obama said with links to the video:
Barack Obama In Springfield, Missouri:
“So nobody really thinks that Bush or McCain have a real answer for the challenges we face, so what they’re going to try to do is make you scared of me. You know, he’s not patriotic enough. He’s got a funny name. You know, he doesn’t look like all those other Presidents on those dollar bills, you know. He’s risky. That’s essentially the argument they’re making.” (Barack Obama, Remarks, Springfield, MO, 7/30/08)

Barack Obama In Rolla, Missouri:
“That’s not the debate we’re getting out of John McCain right now. He’s spending an awful lot of time talking about me. You notice that? I haven’t seen an ad yet where he talks about what he’s gonna do. And the reason is because those folks know they don’t have any good answers, they know they’ve had their turn over the last eight years and made a mess of things. They know that you’re not real happy with them. And so the only way they figure they’re going to win this election is if they make you scared of me. So what they’re saying is, ‘Well, we know we’re not very good but you can’t risk electing Obama. You know, he’s new, he doesn’t look like the other presidents on the currency. He’s got a funny name.’ I mean, that’s basically the argument — he’s too risky.” (Barack Obama, Remarks, Rolla, MO, 7/30/08)

Barack Obama In Union, Missouri:
“John McCain and the Republicans, they don’t have any new ideas, that’s why they’re spending all their time talking about me. I mean, you haven’t heard a positive thing out of that campaign in a month. All they do is try to run me down, and you know, you know this in your own life, right? If somebody doesn’t have anything nice to say about anybody, that means they’ve got some problems of their own. So they know they’ve got no new ideas, they know they’re dredging up all the stale, old stuff they’ve been peddling for the last eight, ten years. But since they don’t have any new ideas the only strategy they’ve got in this election is to try to scare you about me. They’re going to try to say that I’m a risky guy, they’re going to try to say, ‘Well, you know, he’s got a funny name, and he doesn’t look like all the presidents on the dollar bills and the five dollar bills,’ and they’re going to send out nasty e -mails. And the latest one they got me in an ad with Paris Hilton. You know, never met the woman. But, you know, what they’re going to try to argue is that somehow I’m too risky. You know, basically what they’re saying to you is we know we didn’t do a real good job, but he’s too risky.” (Barack Obama, Remarks, Union, MO, 7/30/08)

However, DJ takes it a step further and reminds us that this is not the first time Obama has done this. Check out this quote from Obama that appeared in the Chicago Sun-Times from five weeks ago:
The choice is clear. Most of all we can choose between hope and fear. It is going to be very difficult for Republicans to run on their stewardship of the economy or their outstanding foreign policy. We know what kind of campaign they’re going to run. They’re going to try to make you afraid. They’re going to try to make you afraid of me. He’s young and inexperienced and he’s got a funny name. And did I mention he’s black?

JR – Duh, the race card has been played, but not by Obama. McCain is making Obama’s race and his ethnicity an issue every day. THAT is your low point in the campaign. It only gets lower when Obama is attacked for defending himself from this scurrilious attacks.
It is increasingly obvious that all McCain, the GOP, and possibly BD has to offer is attack and slander, no plans, no ideas, no thoughts, just attack and the simple mantra: Obama is bad, you can’t trust Obama, and McCain isn’t Obama. Who even has an idea what McCain stands for? I seem to recall BD attacking John Kerry for a similarly bad campaign in 2003…
PS – In more important issues, I’m not so keen on the Pudge trade, but with Jonesy going on the DL, I guess we needed the pitching (of course, I’m not sure I think Jones going on the DL is all bad…)
Ragnar,
If Democrats didn’t do and say such dreadful things, we wouldn’t have to point it out.
Sorry, Senator “57″ isn’t going to get a free pass here.
Didn’t realize Pudge had been traded. That’s too bad. He brought the Tigers to being a competitive team.
“McCain is making Obama’s race and his ethnicity an issue every day.”
Oh, let’s see the proof of that!
J.R, it sounds like you’re saying “Well if he didn’t talk about it, we wouldnt all be so uncomfortable! And I don’t like it.” Ridiculous.
The man is simply stating McCain, using the playbook of George Bush and Jesse Helms, is snake-ishly using his race and name to cast doubt. I don’t blame McCain, he knows NOT to steer the debate to the issues…that way he’d be blown out of the water.
HA! Good one, Ian.
Look at this folks…typical Democrat playbook. Redirect from the fact that Obama said the outlandish comments.
They can’t defend the comments, so they are attacking the person who pointed it out.
It’s nice how we can all see the GOP’s disgraceful “southern strategy” out in the open and at play.
Still waiting for your proof, Ragnar.
Wait, Obama is black? What? When the hell did this happen?!?!? Why doesn’t anyone tell me these things?!?!
Does dad know?!?!
SW – Why no interest in supporting the only real conservative, Barr? Is it just a vote against Obama (which might demonstrate that McCain’s incessent attack ads could be working…)?
Trust me, I NEVER look to Ragnar to tell me who a “real Conservative” is.
I just chuckle when I think about the many many rants Ragnar had about how Bush was stubburn and would not admit reality… Reminds me of a certain Dem Senator who toured Iraq SAFELY because of a surge plan (Whihc McCain called for for YEARS) and then won’t admit it worked. Hmmm
Barr is not on my radar.
Good Lord! Teh Stoopid… it burns!
Months and months of “reporting” by sites you link to (sites such as Faux news, Little Green Wingers, Townhall, Redstate) as well as Hannity, Rush, Savage, and the other TruthTellers of the Right have been spewing racial nonsense against BO ad nauseum from the get go. Dont you recall the labels like….. Hafrican (Faux), separatist, angy black man, not-black-enough, reparations demanding, rev write loving, madrassa-educated manchurian candidate, etc…… that you guys have been bandying about for 1.5 years now? Why, that sounds like “playing the race card”.
What a sad lot you are.
