Romney is the pick. Or is he?

Race 4 2008 is breaking, un-sourced, that Romney is the VP pick for John McCain. But the man who broke the story this week that the announcement would be made, Bob Novak, was not so sure tonight with Sean Hannity.

Update (July 23, 10:25 a.m.): The saga of Bob Novak’s blog-post continues, saying on Fox News this morning that he kinda feels duped by senior McCain campaign officials who floated the idea of making an announcement this week, but are now backing-off that sentiment. Novak thinks this might have been done to get some buzz about the VP pick while Obama is off playing presumptive president overseas.

Now, Dana Bash of CNN is chiming in saying that Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty is back in the mix.

McCain is also flying to a somewhat secretive meeting with Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal tonight in New Orleans. However, Jindal has been growing less oblique about turning down a potential VP offer.

To quote Turk, from the Disney Tarzan movie my youngest is currently hooked on:

    “The fun has arrived!”

Or perhaps, “the energy is back”. This is the pick conservatives were really waiting for.

Really? Which conservatives? Not the social (Huckabee or Brownback). Not the security (Gulliani). Not the xenophobic (Hunter). Not the …. ah well, i lost count.

Oh yeah, the “true” conservatives. My bad.

Not this conservative. I would hate to see Gov. Romney’s potential as a conservative leader short-circuited by four years as vice president in Bush XLI’s second term.

If Romney is selected, consider my support for McCain in the garbage can!

    Leslie and Krystle,
Your thoughts are exceptionally misguided in our two-party world.

I applaud your dedication to principle, but

    1) I’d rather have conservative-lite than no conservative at all. We can’t afford to sit this out. And Romney, win or lose, will be set up well for 2012. I don’t think McCain will run again.

    2) These are our choices, like it or not.

As a stuanch conservative on social and economic issues, nothing would give me more pleasure and reassurance than for McCain to pick Romney as his Vice President.

No one can predict where this election is going just yet, but a McCain-Romney ticket will give the GOP its best chance at holding on to the White House, and making several key pickups in the House and Senate.

Personally, there are better options than Romney. Look at Eric Cantor, Sarah Palin or Michael Steele…all fine party leaders who are conservative to the core! These are better options than the flip-flopper Romney. Look, I realize McCain is the party nominee. I even came out in a lukewarm manner to endorse the guy (half hearted, of course). Romney flip flopped on so many issues while he was Governor of Tax-a-chusetts (Massachusetts, for the Politically Correct). He was pro-choice before he was pro-life, he was raising taxes, instead of resorting to fiscal conservatism.

Gee, I guess we could do a lot worse by nominating a squish like Charlie Crist. So, maybe Romney isn’t so bad after all.

Of course Novak was duped. The chatter does the same thing a formal announcement would have without losing the bump of the announcement.

Eric Cantor, maybe. However, he has a bright future in the house, and could one day be Speaker.

But come one….Palin or Steele? Palin was elected Gov. of Alaska in 2006 and was on the city council as a Mayor before that. So, she doesn’t have that much experience. As for Steele, he served as Lt. Gov or MD and later lost his bid for a Senate seat. Before that practiced law.

The experience of Palin and Steele pale in comparison to that of Romney. I am not going to go into everything he has done, but it has been far more extensive to anything Palin or Steele has done.

I am not sure why you even mentioned Steele? J.C. Watts is a far better candidate and conservative.

Well, I am Maryland (Merlynd…for all of the MD Natives in the blogosphere) born and bred, so I hold partiality for my former home state. Michael Steele was a dynamic leader and he would make a fabulous Vice President!

As for J.C. Watts, he would be an even better choice!
