Editorialists blast Republicans over transportation session
By | Friday, July 11th, 2008 | Catch-All

Mainstream media still doesn’t get it.

In three editorials today from the Washington Post, Richmond Times-Dispatch, and Virginian-Pilot, the writers woefully lament how House Republicans “rejected any real attempt at raising revenue statewide”.

Damn right. And when the MSM is angry about what Republicans have done on principle, that’s usually a good sign.

The MSM time and time again sees only one solution to issues, along with the Democrats: “Got a problem? Raise taxes.” It’s their continued misguided reliance on an overly-simplistic, unimaginative, and dimwitted model of governance that keeps their circulation dropping like lemings off a cliff, while new media numbers continue to soar.

Republicans worked hard to advance a principled agenda which raised revenue over and above what was passed last year for Northern Virginia by $300 million and sent at least the same amount passed by HB 3202 last year to Hampton Roads…all while not raising taxes during a time of a housing slowdown, soaring gas prices, and a weakening dollar.

In fact, the only thing in HB 3202 that was found unconstitutional was the regional components, which were amendments submitted by the governor. The statewide component, which provides an average of $560 million a year in new transportation funding without a statewide tax increase, is alive and well. Once again, it was Republicans who made this happen last year with majorities in the House and the Senate…something the media has forgotten or has decided to ignore.

The only failure is MSM and Democrats to recognize economic realities; the only thing consistent is how MSM and Democrats only strategy to govern is to shakedown the taxpayer.

“He and his colleagues acted like boys in a locker room”

The Pilot must be experts on boys locker rooms.

All the Republicans do is attack and destroy plans created by the Dems, unless they are going to provide an alternative plan – any plan – heck, just an idea or two, they aren’t offering anything constructive to the future of Virginia.

And – the lack of a transportation plan WILL cause harm to the economic future of Virginia.

Ragnar, the Republican plan passed the House and was killed by Senate Democrats.

Although I love when you look completely silly, I’m starting to feel sorry for you.

I don’t know if your comment is simply your usual unsupported spin, or if there actually was some GOP bill. Perhaps only the true Va Gov’t geeks were in the know…? Regardless, the GOP was unwilling to compromise with the Dems – and good government is born of compromise.

Good, Ragnar. When you’re shown to not have a clue what you’re talking about, you insult those who actually know.

    You’re an idiot.

HB 6055 was the final GOP bill that advanced. It was largely based upon the use of the growth in future port revenues to fund our region’s package of 6 MPO projects and some more lanes for the HRBT.

The “new” RT 460 and Midtown Tunnel/MLK Extension were not included in the list of PPTAs authorized by HB 6055 becuase VDOT has laready moved forward with soliciting PPTAs for those two major Port related projects.
