Virginia House of Delegates passes offshore drilling bill; Colgan sends vote to Senate floor!
By | Wednesday, July 9th, 2008 | Catch-All

As expected, Del. Chris Saxman’s bill to direct potential future tax revenues gained from possible offshore resources (should the federal moratorium on gaining oil and natural gas be lifted) easily passed the House tonight 56-39. The bill was then immediately referred to the Senate’s finance committee, where Sen. Chuck Colgan (D), chairman of the committee, broke party ranks and sided with the six Republicans to send the bill to a floor vote. Of note, Sen. Dick Saslaw, Majority Leader, is on the finance committee.

Sen. Frank Wagner’s similar bill was killed in the agricutlure, conservation and natural resources committee.

Where did you see it reported to the floor? Are you down there? I can’t find that in LIS anywhere.

If you are down there, what else did the Finance Committee do?

    Reliable sources. :-)

You guys are just full of yourselves today aren’t you?

    Yipee! may it pass…

WTF? That 7-6 vote coming out of Finance happened early this morning. Where was YB Miller and Marsh?

  6. Brian Kirwin July 10, 2008 08:56 am

Miller hightailed it home and shirked her Senatorial duties.

Okay, I’ve got the complete poop now. Yes, the Finance Committee voted this out per LIS on July 10 technically, but this was a continuance from July 9th’s day’s proceedings. The special session has been declared over, so HB6006 while it lives on, does so at a future date and time… probably January 2009. A lot can happen between now and then. Back to work!

More poop… 16-18 at 1:23am this morning, that sucker died! Patriotism wins! Greed loses.

  9. J.R. July 10, 2008 11:37 am

    Rational-behavior loses, head-in-the-sand, anti-American enviornmentalistism wins.

  10. Stephen Gunter July 10, 2008 11:49 am

It’s not even environmentalism. I don’t know what to say… Just another step down the toilet.

  11. eileen July 10, 2008 12:14 pm

Then please explain to me Delegate Joe Bouchard’s floor speech (which can be found here and how you then consider this to be “head-in-the-sand, anti-American enviornmentalistism”?

  12. Brian Kirwin July 10, 2008 15:04 pm

    Who?

  13. J.R. July 10, 2008 16:36 pm

I echo Brian’s sentiment, but not for the same reason. In Bouchard’s statment, he says that the military opposes drilling…but who?

Second Fleet? Fleet Forces Command? CNO? Secretary of the Navy?

    Who?

Who is on record opposing it? I have seen no such opposition voiced.

Concern that the military should be consulted, perhaps. But opposition? That would be a huge step for an organization that prides itself on its taking orders from civilians, saluting smartly, and carrying-on, all the while not taking sides in political debates.
