Tonight (Tuesday) the New York Yankees pay visit to the Pittsburgh Pirates for a three-game set ( see the Yankees bad nightmare in the photograph).

Aside from being neat because it is inter-league play, this is historic.

If you care about baseball, then read this.

The last time the Yankees played in Pittsburgh was October 13, 1960. That date in baseball history stands out; here’s a hint: it rhymes with “Bill Mazeroski.”

In 1960, the Pirates faced the mighty Yankees, you know, the Mantle-Maris-Berra-Ford-Stengel Yankees. They were unbeatable.

In the three games the Yankees won, they won by a combined margin of 38 runs to 3.

The Pirates won their games by scores of 6-4, 3-2 and 5-2.

Then came Game Seven.

The Pirates went ahead 9-7 headed into the 9th, but the Yankees called on Satan to tie the game at 9-9. Right was restored to the world when Maz took the second pitch of the bottom of the 9th over the left field wall for a righteous Pirates’ victory.

Today, the evil Yankees return to Pittsburgh. Although the casts have changed, the karma is still there. Down with the Yankees. Down with the Yankees.

And tonight, Maz throws out the first pitch. How fitting is that?

Are the Pirates still playing baseball?

New Bearing Drift poll question! Who should get into the Hall of Fame first?

    Curt Shilling
    Bert Blyleven

    Schilling.

Who did Blyleven play for? The Indians, Pirates, Twins and Angels? Pbbbbt.

How many decisive, big games in the biggest show did he win? Not as many as Schilling.

    Plus, Schilling is a conservative.

Yes, the Pirates still are, as witnessed by their hosting of the Yankees tonight, thank you very much.

    Oh, and also, Bert Blyleven.

Don’t get me wrong, I like both of the guys, but Blyleven’s career stats are far superior:

    Bert: 287 wins, 3701 strikeouts

    Curt: 216 wins, 3116 strikeouts

    No contest.

I could have sworn the Pirates were AAA.

They might as well be AAA. Working on their 16th-straight losing season.

    Ugh.
