“Dubya” Here…
The Party of Hope, Change, and freebies is once again dividing Americans with fierce partisan rhetoric and the politics of class envy. Check out this radio ad, featuring a Bush impersonator:
Should the census incense us?
“The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct.” Article 1, Section 2 of the US Constitution says government should count us. But the Census Bureau says [...]
More on the Heller decision
This time from Senator Ken Cuccinelli. The Senator has a great legal mind and is admitted to the Supreme Court bar. He attended the oral arguments in Heller and previously wrote on that experience. Here he takes us on his journey through the entire decision:
Thank God for the militia!
If the liberals had their way, this might’ve turned out much differently. An employee of a Virginia Beach pizza restaurant shot and killed a masked robber who had come in the back of the shop to rob it Saturday night, police said. (Virginian-Pilot) I don’t think the founders were counting on the militia to defend [...]
Mark Warner is RIGHT!
For once, former Gov. Mark Warner has a policy I can agree with…I wonder why so few people, especially Democrats, are letting people know about it.
Message to Kaine – Tires are only useful with gas in the tank
Today, Governor Tim Kaine launched a huge fanfare as Good Year announced an expansion of its Danville plant, the world’s largest aircraft tire and medium radial truck tire manufacturing plant. Why, then, has Kaine fought against drilling for our own American resources? Virginia’s coast was spared today by Governor Tim Kaine (D) who rejected a [...]
Republican Party of Virginia 2008 Platform
Amid the hoopla of the Virginia Republican Convention, little fanfare was given to the party platform thatwas passed. Unless I’m way off, this was the first state party platform ever for RPV. Included in the ’08 platform were the 71 planks of Newt Gingrich’s American Solutions. Kudos to Del. Chris Saxman who chaired the committee. [...]
The Supreme Court Gets One RIGHT!
Good news, the Supreme Court has recognized your individual right to possess and use firearms for any lawful purpose under the 2nd Amendment. Now if only they could understand our 5th Amendment property rights. Look for more after I read Scalia’s opinion this weekend.
Tax Attorneys You Should Know
No, really! This is Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, from Minnesota’s 6th congressional district. She has been a federal tax attorney, so she understands very well what high taxes mean to families. Here, she is speaking to the Jennifer Byler Institute on Wednesday as it met in Washington, DC. Unfortunately, her speech was very short as she [...]
Democrats double-tax Hampton Roads
Sen. John Miller, Sen. Ralph Northam, Sen. Yvonne Miller, Sen. Louise Lucas. These Democrats think fuel prices are so low that we in Hampton Roads should pay, not one, but TWO tax increases on gas! SB 6009, which the Senate Democrats happily approved yesterday, raises taxes on gasoline statewide every year for the next six [...]
No Joke:
So, two guys walk into the JP… and walk out MARRIED? Apparently, yes. In Norfolk. Two guys got their marriage license in Newport News and were married in a civil ceremony in Norfolk. Unlike California, where a mayor defied the law to marry same-sex couples, here officials thought Justin was Justine.
Isn’t equality a good thing?
Some don’t think so. “A woman wants to achieve and yet she might have a husband who wants to lay on the couch and watch Oprah all day,” says Dr. David Swanson, a family psychologist. “In that situation, you can understand why that woman might spit on the check every month when she sends it [...]
Chap Petersen and his blooming dogwoods
Sen. Chap Petersen (D-NoVA), wrote a memo to the folks back home that started: “It’s June in Richmond. The dogwoods are blooming in Capitol Square. We should be back bome [sic], but we’re here instead.” I would LOVE to have seen a blooming dogwood yesterday during my visit, but don’t seem to recall seeing any. [...]
A Democrat as Vice Mayor in Chesapeake?
This past May in Chesapeake voters resoundingly rejected to policies of Democrats by electing a Republican-endorsed mayor in Alan Krasnoff and three Republican endorsed council-members in Rick West, Patti Willis, and Debbie Ritter, making the majority of those who sit on council Republican. However, today, councilwoman and chair of the Chesapeake Democratic Party, Ella Ward, [...]
WSJ: “Why is Randy Forbes all alone out there?”
In today’s Capital Journal by Gerald Seib of the Wall Street Journal, he features Rep. Randy Forbes efforts to unite Congress behind his efforts to create a “New Manhattan Project” – seven prize-winning challenges placed before the scientific, business and engineering community to make the U.S. energy independent in the next twenty years. Seib laments [...]
Prudent and responsible action on transportation special session by House Republicans
With the governor calling for statewide tax increases to fund transportation, it makes sense that the House of Delegates would want to see how the governor’s bill actually turns out from the Democratically-controlled Senate before taking any action. Unfortunately, the governor can’t find anyone in the Senate to patron his bill. The Senate Majority Leader, [...]
VPOD. Episode 29. Interview: Attorney General Bob McDonnell.
Attorney General Bob McDonnell is calling for extensive VDOT reforms before raising any taxes commonwealth-wide. I had the opportunity to catch-up with him at his Richmond office to discuss his ideas on this special session and possible outcomes.
Brian and Jim go to Richmond
Well, we made it from Hampton Roads to Richmond for the special session in record time — only once stopping for White Castle (transportation crisis, what crisis?). We’ll be live-blogging throughout the day. So is Garren Shipley. Today’s highlights so far include getting shut-out of going on the House floor by the Speaker and sitting [...]
Send that check to Bearing Drift
Legacy is a big deal for those who watch Virginia governors: Mark Warner raised taxes to benefit education, health programs and public safety; Jim Gilmore cut the car tax; George Allen abolished parole and reformed welfare. (Virginian-Pilot) Hey – that sounds familiar! Kaine’s interview with Bearing Drift
Why not oil?
Today’s Virginian-Pilot editorial offers their suggestion for more internet capacity. They think limiting bandwidth is a bad idea. At best, though, such measures are temporary. As more and more media migrate to Internet-based delivery, the need for bandwidth will only grow. Which means there’s only one real solution: Make more. The same is true for [...]
Kudos to Senator Warner
and, drumroll please, Senator WEBB! Considering that Warner-Lieberman is only the most recent in a long line of travesties that John Warner has attached his name to, you can imagine that I more frequently mention the name of my senior senator with disapprobation than its counterpart. But this time, I write in praise of my [...]
Forbes presents New Manhattan Project on CNN
Rep. Randy Forbes (R-VA) is actually leading in Congress instead of waiting to be led when it comes to energy. His bill to create 100% energy independence within the next 20 years is one of the boldest initiatives that has been proposed in Congress in decades. “It’s time to stop talking and actually put a [...]
Episode 28. VPOD Interview: State Sen. John Miller. June 20, 2008.
State Sen. John Miller (D-1) has been a strong proponent of several transportation projects in Hampton Roads since winning election last November. He joins me today to discuss transportation, energy, and possible outcomes from next week’s special session. One noteworthy point made during the discussion was Miller’s willingness to consider off-shore drilling. After listening to [...]
Thelma Drake: GI Bill without a tax increase
Congresswoman Thelma Drake again showed how important conservative representation is in Washington. The easy path? Approve any GI bill that comes along. The right path? Oppose Democrat tax increases. Drake and the Republicans approved a new GI bill after the Democrat tax increase was stripped out. Drake -”I am happy that our troops will get [...]
The $Billion$ Tax Man
Governor Kaine has unveiled his transportation proposal. Surprise, Surprise… Behind the curtain is a boondoggle. None of this does what we really need in Virginia. For his BILLION dollar tax increase, we get only business as usual in Richmond. No move to re-assess VDOT’s role or reconsider how we manage our transportation system. There is [...]
Episode 27. Virginia Politics On-Demand. June 19, 2008.
In this week’s show, Shaun Kenney and Brian Kirwin join J.R. to talk the latest in politics in Virginia. This week’s show includes: J.R. dives right into the discussion by wondering when we’re going to “Drill here! Drill now! And Pay Less!”; Brian illustrates how little Democrats have to offer when it comes to transportation [...]
Kaine’s polls nosedive
Gone are the days in 2006 when Gov. Kaine scored a 77% approval rating, and 2007 and his 63% rating. Gone too are the 54%, 57% and 56% from this year. He’s down to 46%, and that’s in a poll that oversampled 50% more Democrats than Republicans. Keep pushing tax increases, Timmy! (h/t Chase)
