Cuccinelli endorses Wolf, but that’s not all…

Dispelling the gossip in some circles, Cuccinelli endorsed his Congressman for re-election at — if my inbox time stamp is correct — at something like 4am this morning.

From the Cuccinelli Compass

First of all, Congressman Wolf.

I worked on my first campaign when I was 7 years old (that is NOT a typo…). My aunt brought home mailers for Frank Wolf, and my brother and I helped her stuff mailings and get them out. Frank Wolf did not win that year, but of course, now he is Congressman Wolf because he kept fighting until he won in the 1980 Reagan landslide.

Congressman Wolf has a primary opponent this year and so we will go to the polls in the 10th district on June 12th to choose our GOP nominee for Congress. I hope we will stick with Congressman Wolf.

In addition to being known as the “conscience of the Congress” for his superb international work for religious freedom and human rights (e.g., Sudan divestment, which he and I have worked on in Virginia), Congressman Wolf has also been a pro-life leader since his arrival on Capitol Hill in 1981.

Throughout his years in Congress, Congressman Wolf has consistently voted against the federal funding of abortion and for the protection of the rights of the unborn, including his strong support of the “Hyde Amendment.” As the ranking member of the House State-Foreign Operations appropriations subcommittee, Congressman Wolf led the successful effort to keep the “Mexico City policy” in place in the final spending bill for FY 2008. It should be noted that this is a very big deal and it will continue to be a challenge in a Democrat-controlled Congress. This is quite an accomplishment while in the minority.

Congressman Wolf has also consistently opposed using federal tax dollars to fund embryonic stem cell research, and he has also opposed weakening the policy of prohibiting abortions at U.S. military facilities, even if privately funded. While I don’t think these organizations always get their picks right, in this case, the endorsements of Congressman Wolf by the National Right to Life and the Virginia Society for Life are right on the mark. For what it’s worth to any of you, I add my endorsement to theirs. See you on June 12th at the polls.

Second, this weekend at the 10th district convention, we will choose three people to sit on the Republican Party of Virginia’s State Central Committee (SCC). I hope that you will join me in supporting Jo-Ann Chase of Loudoun County, Kay Gunter of Clarke County (for re-election), and Howie Lind of Fairfax County.

Now, anyone who knows Cuccinelli knows he and Wolf have worked together closely on some issues and have been on opposite sides of others. And, Cuccinelli isn’t backing down from his campaign to advance better leadership on the 10th District Committee (much to the dismay of some old guard Wolf supporters). But some things haven’t changed since Ken Cuccinelli was 7 years old — he thinks competition is healthy and he still supports Frank Wolf.
