….that Mariel Alper graduates Old Dominion University today with a Criminal Justice degree and a near-A average.

And she’s 17.

She said eighth grade was boring, so she skipped High School and aced college. It says a lot about her, but it speaks volumes about education, too. Pilot story here.

About the author

Brian Kirwin

The right wants to jeer him. The left wants to censor him. Moderates usually want both. Brian Kirwin is a political consultant and public relations strategist in Virginia Beach with a lightning-rod flair. Brian also serves on the VB Arts & Humanities Commission and frequently appears on Hampton Roads theatrical stages, if only to prove that all actors aren’t liberals. Kirwin’s columns stir up debate and hit the political scene with no punches pulled.

Brian, how do you think education has reached this pitiful level?

Honestly, I don’t think the schools got worse. I think the world changed, and what was good enough 50 years ago isn’t good enough anymore.

Massified, homogenized education measured by time and not accomplishment is contrary to every standard outside education.

Students learn according to how many years they’ve been in the system by teacher paid according to how many years they’ve been in the system. Achievement changes nothing, so you get less of it.
